Guest guest
Hi - This is Pat (Cyndi's Mom) and I just received my Feb. issue of Reader's Digest. On the cover is a picture of Kellie (formerly of ER), with the caption " Hero of Health " . On page 104 is her story of how her sister contacted an Autoimmune Disorder and how Kellie's life changed because of it. She now uses her celebrity status to help get out the word about AD. It is written that she has become a national spokesperson and has worked tirelessly for the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association. Last year she effectively lobbied Congress, and was instrumental in the passage of legislation that will have a significant impact on autoimmune disease research. For her efforts, Reader's Digest has named Kellie a 2001 Health Hero. Please try to read her story " The Healing Touch " in Feb. issue of Readers Digest. Maybe we should all send a " thank you " note to Kellie at AARDA just to let them all know there, that we are counting on them for some help in fighting this disease. Just a thought. Guest guest
Lori, yes the best way I found to "explain" an autoimmune disorder, is that we become alergic to our own cells and body. Christi
Guest guest
You do not contract an autoimmune disorder, you do not get it from someone or something. Autoimmune diseases are illnesses in which the immune system reacts to normal components of the body as if they were foreign substances and produces antibodies against them. In another words our own body attacks our organs ect. Lori C. Re: [ ] Re: Reader's Digest Article >How did her sister contract a Autoimmune disorder? Guest guest
According to the article, her sister had much the same trouble most all of us have had in getting a correct diagnosis. She was first diagnosed as having an unusual virus. When re-admitted to the hospital she was then diagnosed with lupus, but one of the more virulent forms that attacked her internal organs. I think Kellie learned from this bitter experience that so little is known about autoimmune disorders, that treatment is often delayed and time is of the essence when dealing with this disease. Hope this helps. Pat (Cyndi's Mom) Re: [ ] Re: Reader's Digest Article >How did her sister contract a Autoimmune disorder? " Celiac disease is listed as one of the top 10 diseases that doctors miss diagnosing. The article gives statistics as to who is at risk, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Great read.
