Guest guest
Colin hasn't lost any teeth yet, but at the last dentist visit he mentioned that we would have to pull some adult teeth because there would not be room for them in his mouth. He is going to have us meet with an orthodondist for a consult when Colin turns 6.
Guest guest
Hi Katy, I had many baby teeth removed due to over crowding and as i got older had to have all my wisdom teeth removed due to the same problem, (ok insert funny jokes about no wisdom left here...... Hehe) Now at age 27 i've had no dental work ie fillings, but only make sure i get checkups and make sure my teeth have enough room, Hope this helps katyudine wrote: 's dentist wants him to see an orthodontist. Any one else have advice for q's to ask, or even how to pick the right kind of orthodontist? Has anyone had to actually remove adult teeth? I think 's speech is being affected, since the saliva is really pooling in his mouth. We thought we had outgrown this problem, but people have noticed his speech is becoming slurrier. thanks, katy
Guest guest
Hi Katy, I've had extensive dental and orthedontic work done (aren't I lucky?!). I had a lot of baby teeth (I can't remember the exact number) and 6 or 7 adult teeth removed due to overcrowding. I'm not sure if those adult teeth were extra or I had the the typical number, but they had to be removed due to overcrowding. My first visit to the orthodontist was when I was eight and my last visit was my senior year of high school, so we get to know the one we had chosen pretty well (in fact, I was with that office so long that the original ortho. retired half way through my treatment and I had to finish out with the new one <grin>). Anyway, there were several issues including a severe underbite (which I eventually had jaw surgery for); extreme overcrowding; and extreme disalignment of the teeth. I had braces from 13-17 and retainers from 10-13 and again from 17-19. I would pick an orhtodontist that has had lots of experience with more involved work - not just the run of the mill teeth straigtener. We were lucky enough to find an orthodontist that not only had experience as an oral surgeon, but also had other RSS patients. Since RSS kids due have specific problems with smaller jaw and mouth area, I would suggest getting someone that understands or has had experience with those issues, if possible. We were also blessed in the fact that the orthodontist we found had a really good relationship with my oral surgeon and they worked together to develop a comprehensive plan (to this day I tout my oral surgeon as the best doctor I have ever seen). Hopefully 's case won't be as involved as mine, but I can tell you that every dollar spent and everything endured was well worth it. My jaws and teeth now align properly and I don't have TMJ anymore or headaches from the misalignment. It's easier to take good care of my teeth because they're not crowded and stuck in a space that isn't big enough to accommodate them. ~Hillary 23, RSS katyudine wrote: 's dentist wants him to see an orthodontist.
