Guest guest
Pam, Lets see if I can sum this up easy Surgery #1 July 30 2005 Lefort 1, chin aug #2 Aug 10, 2005 due to surgeon messed my bite up worse.. started noticing about 1-2 months (Sep-Oct) later that my upper teeth did not show, my mouth seems sunken it, and upper face lots larger..developed 4 fistulas (pus pockets) on either side of gums, told doctor I taste infection and saw yellow stuff coming out..said to watch them #3 Jan 3 2005, plates were broken into, and screws were just sitting in bone around March notice upper jaw moving placed on another round of antibiotic for infection in gums..around April had cadiver bone coming out of fistula areas..doctor said lets watch it I kept asking doctor for CT scan or culture of drainage of gums, he denied May 2005 2nd opinion informed I had infection in sinus and needed another surgery to fix loose jaw June 2005- my surgeon said he would make me a bite plate, and he caterized the fistulas and said there is no way to tell you have sinus infection by panoramic xray that the other surgeon (consult) had told me, but since then I got report of that visit with my surgeon in June and it states I had infection per panoramic xray that he took...???? contradicting huh??? I never heard from this doctor, I called reg the bite plate he was going to make, no phone call back.... I went to see this new surgeon, and he immed did a CT scan and it revealed 100% right sinus full infection and left 90% ...he sceduled me for 20 hyperbarci chamber treatment prior to this surgery at 2 hrs each..put me on high dose of antibiotic, sent me to infectious disease doctor for consult....he said he thought I was grinding my teeth and applying pressure to upper jaw not letting it heal prop.. the other doctor had known from the beginning I grinded my teeth after this last surgery , he said both plates were broken again , so he wired me shut for 6 weeks and I have to do 10 more hyper baric chamber treamtent after this surgery..he did say all the infection was gone that he saw dueing this surgery..all fisutulas finally healed so thats the story Jill @yahoo.ca> wrote: Hi Jill, it's been 5 weeks for me. I had a lefort and also had my bottom jaw moved - I had a cross-bite, over-bite and open-bite ... lovely, huh? Why have you needed 4 different surgeries, if you don't mind me asking. Some people only have lower-jaw surgery and it's alot easier for them to smile after 2 weeks - the upper jaw causes alot more swelling and takes a looonnngg time to go down. I've met alot of people in my OS's office that have had upper surgery done and have rarely seen someone at 2 weeks that has a proper smile. I had a pallate expansion done 3 years ago, which is upper jaw, and my swelling lasted a long time. I didn't even realize how long I was swollen until I saw a picture of myself taken 3 months after the surgery - and I was still swollen, I just didn't realize it at the time. Supposedly your features will change for a long time as the swelling decreases. As far as my gums go....they are the least of my worries, since I had lower jaw surgery my lower lip and chin are numb, so if I can regain that feeling I will be extremely happy! Try to stay positive.....your face will change over the next couple of months......don't let yourself get down during this healing process, it does take a long time. Just think how you felt a week ago and give yourself a pat on the back that you've made it through another week. It's a slow process, isn't it? Take care, Pam > > > > > > Hello everyone! Guest guest
Pam, I have returned back to normal function already except for work..I try to stay busy but when I get tired I rest. The knot (bent plate) on the side of my nose really bothers me, I was hoping this doctor would fix it..I had it happen my last surgery too..this one sticks out even more...he says to let things heal and then if we have to we will take out al the plates and screws...I dont know if I can stand more surgery...do you have any suggestion on what to do when your face itches and of course you cant scratch..I will mention to my doctor about the elavil med..I am already taking the ativan at night but I will wake up and feel like Im pressing down on my teeth even though they are wired..maybe I need a muscle relaxer...thanks for any help reg the itching...I use a heating pad and it feels good... Thanks Jill v123violet wrote: Hi Jill, you poor thing...you have been through so much! I'm glad you have a different surgeon - I bet he's fixed everything up properly this time. After all you've had done I understand why you would be wanting everything to be done and overwith after this surgery. Unfortunately...you will have to heal from this last surgery too, and that takes time. Once you are all healed from this surgery, it will all be in the past for you and you can get back to life as usual - but, give yourself a couple months. I am finally back to my life after 5 weeks, but my face still feels bad and I'm still swollen. Two weeks is still early, if you can give yourself a little while longer to heal, then try and resume your activities, the healing will go by alot quicker, and the swelling will eventually go down. Try a heated washcloth on your face for swelling, I've been using a heating pad, but a warm washcloth sounds better. Also...my OS has given me Ativan for night grinding, and he also uses Elavil so patients don't grind for the first two months. Good luck with everything and take care of yourself. I used to also remind myself that the itching was a GOOD sign that my nerves were coming back to life! Keep up the recovery both of you. You've come a long way so give yourself a pat on the shoulder.
