Guest guest
Boys and Girls - Before you start getting your hopes up about Extreme Makeover I wnat you to know what happened to me. I had to do my video for my application at the last minute because the person that was going to help me couldn't get together with me. I didn't feel good about the video so I found an open call near Houston - I am in Dallas. Well on 3 hours sleep I drove 4 hours for the open call - I was like 350 in line. They started taking people in at about 8 or 9 am and I was on my way home by 11:30 - That is how quickly the screening process was. I was told that they were not accepting any post-gastric bypass patients at the time because they need people to be able to heal in 6 weeks. (Also they will not accept people that are more than 40 lbs overweight.) She did not say they were not ever going to take WLS people but I was really upset. It is actually really hard for me to watch the show now but I am still happy for the people that got selected. Then I had to drive 4 hours home. The thing that is ironic is many of my friends said I wouldn't get picked because I didn't need much work done on my face - That is what shows drama. Most of what I need is body work. I will try again but won't get my hopes up quite as much! Kathy 2-6-98 Dr. /Dallas 130+ lbs gone
Guest guest
I think the most telling thing is the " needs to heal in 6 weeks " comment. Many post gastric-bypass people cannot heal in 6 weeks because they've not religiously kept their iron and other levels high enough. It seems that the show (or most plastic surgeons in the LA area who provide the services on the show) have been exposed to those patients whose levels have dropped with their bypass surgery (those of the tums and flintstones, variety, I feel sure), so that's their expectation. I just finished a LOT of plastic surgery on 12/13 and 12/23. My tummy tuck is practically healed, (i.e., I'm left with binders and the incision line is 98% healed - only in one or two places where the scabs caught on the binder do I have anything still " healing " - And now all the obvious scabs are gone. My face is still a little swollen, minimal bruising left, again at 4 weeks. My arm and breast lifts are now 2 weeks out and except for 3 little scabs on the right arm, and a place where the incision pulled on the left and two scabs, my left arm is healed. Scars are ropey and intense, but healed. My breasts are in the same condition. I'm sorry that you are disappointed, Kathy - but I'm not surprised that this was the outcome. I think those of us who are diligent about our post surgical labs and health will heal in plenty of time, but I'm willing to bet that there are many more patients out there who aren't than who are.
