Guest guest
Lynn I have insulin resistance, also known as metabolic syndrome X -- was diagnosed with that as a teenager. In my case it is a component of having polycystic ovarian syndrome. Fortunately SCD has helped me considerably in stabilizing my blood glucose fluctuations, and even dropped my numbers a bit. Having insulin resistance is also a concern to my gastroenterologist because of having Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction which puts some additional stress on the pancreas. So I pay attention to my blood glucose levels. I'm currently using a Freedom blood glucose meter, but I plan on moving to a Bayer Breeze the next time I need a new one. The blood glucose meters are usually relatively inexpensive, it is the test strips that kill the budget!! I find the Freedom meter to work well; I just like the feel of the Breeze2 or the Contour (a coworker has one so I've handled it a bit). There isn't one standard test for insulin resistance, but most often doctors order a 4-hour glucose tolerance test. I get one of these every 2 to 3 years. My doctors have always looked at my fasting glucose levels in combination with the glucose tolerance test results. In the past eight years I've also used a blood glucose meter somewhat regularly, to keep an eye on my fluctuations. I found the blood glucose meter to be a big help when I was settling into SCD. I have done a bit of reading on insulin resistance, and found one book to be particularly helpful in explaining the condition and how to deal with it: Insulin resistance diet by Dr. Cheryle Hart. I borrowed it from my local library, then knew I would refer to it often so purchased my own copy (it is softcover). Kim M.
