Guest guest
Dawna - good question. Look forward to seeing some replies - because I have no idea! LOL By the way - welcome to parenthood with a TEENAGER! In case I forget - Happy Birthday MATT!! My oldest will be 16 this month. I let him drive my car this summer - that was scary LOL. I let him get up to highway speed. When my dh found out - he almost had a cow. That's okay though - it made my son happy and hopefully, it gave him a little more self-esteem with respect to driving (fortunately, without incident). Well, you have some time for that though <grin>. Have a good rest of the weekend. - H > > Hi all, > I don't recall seeing anything about Polycose on the listserve since > I've been reading for the last couple of months. Guest guest
Hey Dawna, We used to add Polycose to 's formula a long time ago. Before his g-tube placement, he was on Similac w/ Iron, and we had to add the Polycose to make it 30kcal/oz. As I understand it, Polycose is a better additive than cornstarch, for babies under one year of age. It has something to do with how it's digested. And Polycose can be added to foods. It is supposed to be tasteless, but adds calories. I don't know how well it works though, because we didn't use it this way. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Okay - Duocal is another one of these. We used Duocal (referred to us by our nutritionist at Easter Seals) for Ian when he was a baby too. It's tasteless as well and as Pat said - more easily digested and more efficient than corn starch. But, Ian HATES it now and can tell the difference if I try it. Thus, we don't! LOL - H > > Hey Dawna, > > We used to add Polycose to 's formula a long time ago. Guest guest
I think 's ped told me to get her Duocal. If I remember correctly, it has something to do with digest or something like that. B and Kelli advocate22003 wrote: Okay - Duocal is another one of these. Guest guest
Dawna - I would recommend that you obtain and read documents H-26 and H-28 from the MAGIC Foundation. In fact, I know I say this every couple of days -- but these are two documents, written by Dr. Harbison, that should be almost mandatory reading for any parent. One describes why our children are more prone to hypoglycemia, especially nighttime. And the second explains why cornstarch (and polycose for children under age 1) works to prevent nighttime hypoglycemia. Cornstarch and polycose are not recommended for day feedings unless physician recommended, because they act to make a child feel full and then they won't take in other foods that are more nutritionally dense and have more calories. > > Hi all, > I don't recall seeing anything about Polycose on the listserve since > I've been reading for the last couple of months. Guest guest
Yes, Duocal is often recommended by nutritionists, more so than Polycose. Make sure if your child is less than 1 year and you are using Polycose that your physician and/or nutritionist is recommending it. Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for that ... I didn't realize before posting that it was the same as cornstarch. Hoping for an appetite miracle I guess! I have those two articles and have been doing the cornstarch at night as a preventative as I don't know if Noah has hypoglycemia or not. He had slept through the night for a long time and then he started waking and wanting a drink of milk. My husband and I weren't sure if that was a bavioural issue or if he " needed " it, so we have been giving it to him. And then when I got the cornstarch information, I started giving that to him in his milk before bed. Thank you very much for clearing that up for me! You are a wealth of information. Guest guest
We used polycose with practically from the time he started eating until his gtube. Once we had the tube, we stopped. We used to use it on everything. Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 5 1/2 year old twins
