Guest guest
Hi , I had this surgery done 3 years ago. I assume you are having the same surgery I did, where they put a small cut and then you crank every day until it's widened. I had the widener put in 1 week before surgery and I remember it really drove me nuts, but you will get used to it, trust me. It was so long ago, but I think I was back at it a couple of weeks after the surgery. You will have to eat blenderized food for a while, I remember that. It's not as big a surgery as the upper/lower jaw surgery and not as hard of a recovery. You will possibly be numb in your upper face, but I didn't have that with mine. The hardest part of that surgery for me was having the big gap in my front teeth, mine was quite wide (8 mm). They didn't put braces on and start closing it until 4 months after, then it took another 4-5 months to close. But, I'm so happy with my upper jaw now, my tongue actually fits up there where it didn't before, and I don't lisp and trip on my words as much. Hope that helps. Guest guest
Hey Pam, Thanks for sharing, it's helpful. I was wondering (if you can remember) if you knew the approximate size of the cut and how far back they have to cut? You also said recovery could be a couple of weeks. My orthodontist said recovery could be similar to when I got my wisdom teeth out. I had all 4 out at once. Surgery was on a Friday and Monday I was back in school. It was quite simple. I'm also going to be having 2 more surgeries to correct my teeth (along with braces). The 2nd one, they will cut out my upper jaw (teeth basically) and remove a bone in the back. The 3rd will be a chin reconstruction to make my face more proportional to my new mouth. Again, thanks for sharing. > > Hey ~ > > > > I just joined and I'm going to be having upper palate surgery this > > upcoming month. Guest guest
Hi , Unless you are getting something different than I got, I was no way ready to go back into the world after 4 days. I was quite swollen on my upper face, and having to eat blended foods made me quite low on energy. But everyone heals differently - so I don't want to discourage you, just be prepared in case you have to have a week or two of recovery. What they did for me, was cut my upper gums and put an incision in the bone that way. So, a good portion of under my lip was all cut and stitched. All that upper part of my face was swollen. Maybe just check with your Dr. to see if this is the same procedure that you are getting.
