Guest guest
Hi Anita, Your daughter will not feel like this forever. The first week can be the roughest part of the recovery. Every day should be better for her. She needs to make sure she is getting adequate nutrition and rest, and keeping her mouth clean. The buzzy asleep feeling is numbness. That is usually the most frustrating part of the recovery - it's a good sign that she's feeling it as it means that the nerves that were jostled around are now waking up (and paying her back a bit for taking them on a wild ride). When I had my upper/lower/genio surgery, I was numb from behind my eyeballs to below my chin - no feeling at all. When it started to come back, it was just like she describes. I even got sharp jabbies at times, which usually signified the return of even more feeling. It's just part of the deal. Much patience is required to wait out this part of the process. She's also probably feeling the effects of the anaesthesia, which can cause emotional lows. That won't last forever either. Drinking lots of fluids will help to flush out that swelling. Hope that helps, > My DD had her Lafort I Ostonomy on Saturday in a 4 hour surgery. It went well but after she bled for quite a while but the NG tube that was in her nose and down into her stomach prevented her from vomiting. > > We came home this morning from the hospital now the fun begins on my part. She cannot eat anything but drink. She cannot open her mouth even a little bit and using a cup does not work, I bought a mustard type bottle for me when I had my surgeries that worked a little bit but she kept crying when trying to eat or take medicine. She is 18 and never cries so she must be miserable. > > I got a gift from (). She sent my DD a bunch of zip and squeeze bags. She was able to take in some chicken broth and drink some apple juice since she could stick the straw in the side of her mouth and manage to get the liquids behind her teeth to swallow. > > She is forever calling me (she cannot speak so she calls my cell phone from her cell phone as it shows up her name) and I haven't gotten any sleep but snatches here and there. Plus it is so hard as a Mom seeing my Angel hurting so bad. Her little tiny face is now so hugely swollen and misshapen. > > My vent is over now. Welcome to my pity party. > > My question is why is her lips and nose suddenly feeling like it has a buzzy asleep feeling. > >
Guest guest
I'm glad the surgery went well and hopefully her recovery will be quick. I think it is really great that sent her a food supply. It amazes me how much empathy and heartfelt good wishes the people on this site have for one another. I know when I first found out that I would be having this done I had so many questions and my nerves were working overtime, and I have found a lot of comfort here. Thanks to all! > My DD had her Lafort I Ostonomy on Saturday in a 4 hour surgery. Guest guest
I am glad all went well during the surgery. Your daughter is really lucky to have you to help her through the recovery process. Having children myself who have had other surgeries, I feel for you at having to see your child in pain and discomfort. But I agree with the other posts that you are probably at the worst of it right now, and it will get better. The swelling tends to be really severe about now, but tends to get gradually better from this point on. How great that sent the zip squeeze to you! And I am glad they are helping too. Hang in there, and don't worry about venting here! It is completely the correct place to do just that. We each have either been there, are there with you, or are getting ready to go through exactly the same thing. Having a place to vent is your best therapy, whether you are the patient or the caregiver. And try to get some rest yourself too. As DD gets better, she may get cranky due to the effects of the anesthesia, the discomfort, and feeling impatient with the healing process. You will need to be at your best for that. And you can vent about that too if you need to! lol Please give your daughter my best, and to you too. Hugs, Fran > My DD had her Lafort I Ostonomy on Saturday in a 4 hour surgery.
