Guest guest
Hi , I tried a few lip products, but the very best one was Aquaphor, by Eucerin. You can ask for it at your local drugstore, either the pharmacy or cosmetics counter. For nasal congestion, I was prescribed liquid sudafed. I also used a mist humidifier constantly, and lots of q-tips (over 600) and hydrogen peroxide solution to clean my nose out (CAREFULLY). Because I'd heard about the rebound effects of Afrin, I just didn't use it. I did use a saline nose spray, though. The q-tip and hp solution was the best, though. Have you checked out the geocities site? There's lots of useful info there on what supplies you'll need. http://www.geocities.com/orthognathicinfo/ Hope that helps, (upper/lower/genio Aug 2002) > Hello Group, > This is my first post, though I have been reading for a couple > months. Guest guest
Do mind me asking - are you having this surgery for cosmetic reasons or because you are in pain, have difficulty chewing, etc? I've been told for the past few years as well that I need to have jaw surgery, however I don't have any problems with pain, or with eating, etc. thewaterone wrote: Hello Group, This is my first post, though I have been reading for a couple months. I've been going through my shopping list of supplies that I think I will need and I'm curious if anyone has recommendations for a good lip balm or something for the lips for healing afterward? I've never been a big chapstick user so I really have no idea what works good. Also what has worked best for people for dealing with the nasal congestion? Is Afrin good? The congestion and breathing problems I hear about is what I'm dreading most about this whole ordeal. I'm sure I will probably have more questions later as the date draws near. Guest guest
Samara, My biggest reason for having the surgery is to improve the function of my teeth- I have difficulty chewing some foods. Also if left as is, my teeth will prematurely wear. I do have some discomfort in the form of muscle soreness in my jaws (usually after lots of talking or chewing) but no severe pain. All that said, I'm certainly looking forward to the change in appearance too. It will be nice not to have an underbite. > Hello Group, > This is my first post, though I have been reading for a couple > months. I am having surgery on August 31st. Guest guest
Hello, - Welcome to the group! I have an underbite too, and am having my surgery next summer: my OMS plans on doing a BSSO for mandibular set-back and probably a LeFort I to advance my maxilla, although he won't know about the latter until Dec. or Jan. I just got my braces on last Tuesday, and will wear them pre-op for an estimated ten months unless my teeth move faster./ As far as lip balm is concerned, I use L'Occitane 100% Shea Butter - it soothes my chapped lips from these braces really well, but it has lots of other uses too. A large tin lasts a really long time. You can buy it at www.qvc.com or www.loccitane.com . / Again, welcome to this site! ~~ Diane (Idaho) > Hello Group, > This is my first post, though I have been reading for a couple > months. Guest guest
Hi Sammyara, I don't know your situation, but if you are being told you need the surgery, but don't have functional problems at this time, it may help to know that if you don't have the surgery, those functional problems could develop. I am having a complex repair, that has been made more complex by not having the surgery until I am in my early 50's. Cosmetically, my problem is not obvious at all, though all the OD's I have been to saw it when they walked into the room with me (UGH!). But it has never detracted from my appearance. Yet having the misalignment and overly deep bite, and underdeveloped upper and lower jaw (I was on heavy cortisone from age 5 to 13 for extremely severe allergies as a child and this did a major number on my jaw and dental development from what I understand now - they don't tend to do this anymore) has worn away my teeth - still not noticable cosmetically, but it has really impeded my chewing, biting and causes choking frequently. What I am trying to say, is that a functional problem can develop over time due to the misaligngment, so what may appear to be a cosmetic improvement, is actually a preventative measure for future functional problems. And if the damage does continue, the repair and correction can be much more complex and involved at a time of life when you are less able to endure extensive recoveries. Younger people tend to heal more quickly with the bone reformation from what I have seen. And even though my appearance hasn't been a major concern for me with this surgery, I am told that it will have a huge impact on cosmesis for me too. Though my jaw deformity is not obvious, I do have faily deep nasolabial folds, my septum is deviated, and squished from the shortened jaw, so my nose will be more in balance with my face, and my cheeks, which I always thought were too full, will be more balanced with my jaw correction too. The OS said that moving my upper jaw forward and lenghthened, and the lower jaw moved forward and lengthened, will balance my cheeks which it turns out are not too full after all. So I am having a unexpected cosmetic improvement for several functional repair reasons! Go figure! lol So I hope you consider that while cosmesis is a respectable goal for people with this who may not have functional problems, it can also be preventative for future problems. The long term consequences of jaw problems can be far reaching. Good luck with your decision and consideration about this!
