Guest guest
Krickett, I would assume that they are giving you " generic " instructions that cover all bases for them. If they give you the MOST restrictive instructions -- telling you NO vitamins, then you won't be encountering the ones that could cause problems. You are right that the main ones they are looking for are the Vitamin E -- which lurks in even the innocent multivitamin (though not enough to typically cause a problem). The calcium and iron SHOULDN'T cause a problem -- what I would do is make a list of what you DO want to take and call the DOCTOR and specifically request to do so -- explaining why in your particular case (WLS post op) that you believe it is important for you to continue to do so. If the doctor is insistent that you NOT take ANYTHING, well, a week without will not be likely to cause a problem -- however, your doctor is really just trying to cover his/her ass in the event that you were to take something because you " misunderstood " his directions. I gave my doctor a list of what I was taking and what I was going to stop before the surgery and what I wanted to take immediately before and after my surgery (I used a few healing herbal supplements, extra vitamin C and zinc and calcium -- I dropped my multivitamin). She was all for it -- was pleased with the research that I had done and agreed with what I was going to do. She was also really pleased when I told her I was drastically increasing my protein intake in the few weeks before surgery and for most of the healing period afterwards. I healed much faster than many of her patients. Just remember, most docs offices are going to give you the " dummy " instructions -- you have to sometimes present YOUR plan of action and get them to agree or disagree with it. Guest guest
I did it prior to Panni and shortly there after. It certainly helps with the healing. Guest guest
I increased protein prior to my plastics and did beautifully. I also only did shakes and vites for a week after my tt as I was afraid to have too solid a poop Marjie Re: Confused re panni instructions Krickett, I would assume that they are giving you " generic " instructions that cover all bases for them. Guest guest
I was loaded to the gills for my revision. Although the risk rate was high, I basically walked thru it. But I did nap for 6 weeks. Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
<<I just got off the phone with the nurse at my PS surgeon's office. She said that for 7 days prior to surgery I am to take no vitamins or herbal supplements.>> Kricket - A word of warning. Before my last surgery on 2/14/03, I was asked what I was taking and told my doctor, however, I forgot to tell her ALL of the vitamins/supplements/Pain Free I was taking. I always knew about aspirin, but don't ever take that anymore, so I gave it no thought about what vitamins/herbals I may have forgotten to tell her. Long story short - while doing my panni, she had to PULL OUT and not complete the rest of the surgery (bilateral scar revision on my outter thighs) because of the excessive bleeding she was running into with the panni. She said the panni took her double time because of all the bleeding and couldn't figure out why it was happening. We pasted it all together after the surgery. I will be having a brachioplasty, full panni revision and my leg scars reconstructed on Feb. 10, and, believe me, I have stopped EVERYTHING except my calcium and multivitiman. She okayed those, but just for me. Do what your doctor advises. I never even considered " Pain Free " (chondrotin/glucosimine) to be a problem, but anything that increases blood flow or thins the blood will/can be a problem. Better safe than sorry. Believe me, I know. Good luck. Bobbie Anchorage, AK
Guest guest
As one who bled and bled and bled after a " mini " facelift which should have taken about 10 days to heal from completely which ended up requiring a pump hanging out of my ugly neck for weeks, drop everything except prescriptions before your surgery. A week or two isn't going to hurt anything. There are people who never take supplements and manage to live somehow, although I won't be in that particular group of " gamblers. " Seriously, your doc may not even know what supplements might cause excessive bleeding or other complications since many dietary supplements are not studied that scientifically. I was taking many things that thinned blood, apparently. The surgeon's wife also warns against excessive Vitamin E pre-surgically, since everyone hears it helps with healing. I was taking Omega fatty acids, glucosamine, baby aspiring, Vitamin E and god knows what else. Next time, I will drink water and protein before any surgery, nothing else. in Austin RNY April 1998 315/190s Re: Confused re panni instructions <<I just got off the phone with the nurse at my PS surgeon's office.
