Guest guest
Hi katherine Im not that upto date on Autumn, has she just had a gtube placed or does she still have an NG?? Does she have a pump overnight to feed her?? Im just going to say what I do for Liam here. When Liam is sick he does not tolerate his normal bolus (probably because his gut has slowed down) I then reduce to minimum his bolus and give more often until he tolerates it. If Autumn usual has 6oz try 2oz if she tolerates that next time give her 3oz etc. Do you check her ketones, as long as Liam is not showing ketones I would not worry to much about not getting as much as he usually has into him until he is better. If he does show ketones and he isnt tolerating his formula I would go to gastrolyte(pedialyte) with polyjoule or polycose added to it, this is just to keep him hydrated and not shedding ketones. Please email back if i can answer anymore questions or if you dont understand, Im sure there is a few of us who have been up all night worrying what to do next, and im happy to help. Guest guest
, Try not to panic. It is not unusual for a tube fed child to throw up a bolus feed. There could be so many factors: position she was in, being too full from the last feed, ng tube triggering a gag reflex... I could go on and on. I hope she is not getting sick as Jody G suggested, but that could be a possibility, too. I know she just had a cold, though. Perhaps the cold just slowed everything down and her stomach is not emptying as it was. You will know more and be able to put more together once she has the surgery on Monday. At least then you will not have the irritation of the ng tube to be a possibility. It will help to narrow things down if the intolerance continues. Just a note: Max could NEVER tolerate a bolus feed. Even when he was on the pump, we could not go above a certain rate or he would get sick. Now we know it was from delayed emptying. At the time, however, there were no studies like that or they were not commonly done as they are now. He did just fine on continuous feeds, though. Except when he was sick, of course. He sure did look cute walking around with that little backpack on! There were no tiny ones then so we had to make our own. Actually my housekeeper came up with the design and I embellished. It was like the top of a pair of overalls with a pocket in the back for the pump. Worked like a charm. Jodi Z
Guest guest
Hi. Thank you for your help! Sorry for the late response. I read it but couldn't respond. Autumn has the ng tube and she threw up a bolus for no apparent reason. I am just really new at this! She is having surgery for the g-tube tomorrow. > > > > Autumn just threw up her entire 6 oz bolus...I do it slow, about > > 25minutes to be gentile on her stomach and she normally takes them > well > > but this time she moved around and it just all came out...my > question > > is when do I do it again? Guest guest
Thanks for all the help. No, Autumn was not sick, she just kind of tipped over and all the bolus feed poured out...kind of like the teapot song! She has not done it since and otherwise seems to tolerate the feeds. WE do gravity bolus feeds and they go very slow. She is doing better now and is eating/drinking some. > > , > > Try not to panic. It is not unusual for a tube fed child to throw > up a bolus feed.
