Guest guest
, once I have finished my ortho work I will have a few implants and other things done. I was born with a cleft and I have several teeth missing wrote: okay so i know this is technically a site for jaw surgery but implants are in the same oral surgery category so I was wondering if anyone has had a tooth implant on here? I'm missing the tooth on the right side of my two front teeth...i think ti's called the upper right lateral could be wrong but oh well...anyway I have to have something done after the braces come off...i don't really want to have a bridge b/c i heard they grind down the teeth beside the missing one for that....and i was wondering if anyone had any insight on implants because i've been advised that's the best way to go...please reply if you have had any experience with that! --ashley
Guest guest
- It's funny that you ask about implants. That's how this whole Orthognathic Surgery thing got started for me. I needed to have an abscessed removed back in early May and my dentist referred me to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to get it extracted. When I went to my consultation appointment, the OMS asked why I was there and I said I only needed to get a tooth extracted, but I wasn't there to have the surgery he would LUV to do on me and then showed him my underbite. This OMS soon became my Orthognathic Surgeon, Dr. . I thought I'd get out of needing the implant done if I got braces and had the surgery, but no such luck. My OD is saving most of the extraction site for the implant; he has a spring on my wire preventing my teeth from moving into the spot. So, after I get my braces off sometime in late 2006, I will be going in for the dreaded implant. He will be putting me out - he has an OR Suite at his office. My OMS says it's a piece of cake compared to the BSSO + LeFort I will be undergoing next summer. There is a Cosmetic Dentistry message board I posted to a few times and they were very helpful. (AboutCosmeticDentistry.com, I think.) ~~ Diane (Idaho) :-)#) > okay so i know this is technically a site for jaw surgery but implants > are in the same oral surgery category so I was wondering if anyone has > had a tooth implant on here? Guest guest
My daughter had jaw surgery on August 13th so that is why I come to this site to share her experiences but you asked about implants and I can answer from personal experience. I have total implants upper and lower. http://dentalimplants-usa.com/ is my doctor's. On this site there are pages and pages of before and after photo's. I think you should consider the implant before the bridge. An implant is a permanent solution and if your getting just one a piece of cake. Even some dental hygenists can have trouble spotting the implant over the original teeth. As for pain. No big deal. Since you are missing the tooth in question, they just shoot the area with noviccane and you hear a drilling sound and pressure that's all. It will be over in a jiffy. If your doctor does immediate placement then you go home with your tooth. If not then you may have to wait until it bonds to the bone to have the tooth attached. So many Dental professionals approach this differently. I was not put to sleep and had all my teeth pulled and implants placed along with " Teeth in a Day " and it was a 6 hour surgery and would do it again in a heart beat! Being put under has so many risks and outside if sounds that were odd sounding there was no pain whatsoever. Go to the site I mentioned even if you do not make these your doctor's. There is so much information and even a book about implants you can order. Be sure and read the section about what soft drinks can do to your teeth! Yuck! Guest guest
Hi , I had my ortho surgery in Feb this year and just last week had two titanium implants put in. One in the upperjaw in excactly the same place as you require and one in the lower jaw in the centre. The reason I needed them was that I had four milk teeth still in my mouth and the roots had deteriorated to the extend that they were about to fall out. Anyhow to cut a long story short, the orthodontics took care of two of the spaces left and implants took care of the other two. The surgery was essentially painless and took about an hour for both implants, they drill a hole in your jaw and imply screw the implants in. They are a tapered, titanium thread and essentially become a permanent tooth. The day after having the implants put in I had a temporary tooth fitted to the upper implant, the lower implant was a little too swollen and will be done in four weeks time at which time I will also loose the braces (yeeeeeeeeehaw!!!!!! lol). In about three months I get permanent porcelain crowns attached to the implants. Anyhow I can tell you that even tho the tooth at this stage is temporary, it looks great, fits into the gum really nicely and no pain at all. The problem a bridge, as you correctly say is that they grind down part of the teeth next to the missing tooth and bond the bridge to these teeth. I was told by my OS that at best a bridge is temporary, some lasting only a couple of years whereas an implant, albeit a bit more expensive, should last forever. It didnt take much thinking for me to decide which one to go for. Hope this helps Regards > okay so i know this is technically a site for jaw surgery but implants > are in the same oral surgery category so I was wondering if anyone has > had a tooth implant on here? Guest guest
- Have you decided to go ahead and get an implant after your braces come off? I guess everyone has a different experience with these things; I've heard that the procedure is painless and I've known people who had them done and said it is painful (cutting thru gums to jawbone and then drilling into the jawbone sounds painful to ME!). My OMS won't be putting me out as stated previously, just using I.V. Sedation. He says he does lots of these and I.V. Sedation is the best way to go, for him and for the patient. My insurance doesn't cover implants anyway (they will only pay a portion of a fixed bridge), but they may cover the I.V.Sedation. All this for me is a long way off - I still have to have my BSSO + LeFort first! ~~ Diane (Idaho) > okay so i know this is technically a site for jaw surgery but implants > are in the same oral surgery category so I was wondering if anyone has > had a tooth implant on here? Guest guest
thanks to everyone who has replied! i have to discuss my options with my OS when I go to see him next week. It'll prob be next summer before I can have it done and I will prob get my braces off in december of this year...so i'll have to have a temporary partial or something until i can have the implant done...my mom was supposed to call my OD and talk to him about the options too this week but I don't know if she has yet...i'll be glad when everythings over...but i feel like i've gotten over the biggest hill already...the implant will be nothign compared to the upper and lower surgery i'm sure --ashley > > okay so i know this is technically a site for jaw surgery but implants > > are in the same oral surgery category so I was wondering if anyone has > > had a tooth implant on here?
