SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA NEWS....NOVEMBER 2003

STANFORD

The Stanford Celiac Support Group will meet for a gluten free

Indian buffet lunch at Janta Indian Restaurant, 369 Lytton Ave.,

Palo Alto (restaurant phone 650-462-5903) on Saturday, Nov. 22

at noon. The buffet cost is $8.95 adult, $5.59 child, plus tax and tip.

No pre-payment is required but please bring cash to pay for the

meal. Buffet includes salad, various chicken and lamb dishes,

several vegetable dishes, lentil flat bread, and several desserts

plus chai tea. The food is just delicious!

Our next gathering will be held on Sunday, December 14,

from 3-7PM at the home of Avi and Maayan Katz. The address is

OAKLAND

Our Saturday, December 6 meeting from 10:30AM to 12:30PM,

location 1950 lin Street, Oakland, features Don Kasarda,

USDA cereal grain expert, who will discuss families of grains and

those that pose problems for celiacs. Also, Santa will visit and

we'll have a Christmas party. Those with children should bring a

small gift for Santa to give to their children. Santa will make an

appearance at 12, so those with little children may skip the talk and

come later if they wish. Great food as usual for Christmas. Please

bring gluten free brunch item to share with recipe or ingredients list.

SANTA CRUZ

The next regular meeting of the Santa Cruz Celiac Support Group

will be on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 11AM in Meeting Room 1

at Dominican Hospital. We will have a gluten free potluck lunch.

Please bring a list of the ingredients or the recipe.

There are no plans at this time for a December holiday celebration.

CELIAC DISEASE RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Save the date Sat., Jan. 31, 2004, for a gluten free dinner in Berkeley

with Dr. Gail Pyle as guest speaker. She will give an update of the

completed clinical trials of the enzyme that breaks gluten down so

that it is non-toxic to celiacs.

Help raise funds for the Foundation by going to www.buyforcharity.com

350 stores online and select the Celiac Sprue Research Foundation under

the " Hospitals & Med Research " category. A portion of every purchase

will go to the Foundation. Also, we are giving away " gluten free " t-shirts

NOTE TO NEW PEOPLE:

Support group meetings are held in Oakland, Santa Cruz, Sebastopol,

Napa and at Stanford University. R.O.C.K. (Raising Our Celiac Kids)

meetings are in Danville, Palo Alto, and San Francisco. Meeting notices

are sent out monthly announcing upcoming events. You can receive an

e-mail or snail mail notice. This list is confidential and will be used

only

to keep you informed of local celiac activities and important celiac

concerns

the group leaders wish to share. Even if you do not participate in a group,

all of the leaders are happy to answer questions and refer you to other

resources.

If any of you are interested in helping to organize a celiac event in your

area, just let one of the leaders know or make your plans and send the

information to Martha to include in a mailing. Informal gatherings in a

restaurant or any convenient meeting place can be a lot of fun - no formal

program is needed, nor do you have to commit to a lifetime of event

planning. (And, eating out in a group can be a good way to educate

chefs about gluten free requirements.)
