Wow - good response, Joyce. Sounds like you (and I) need to pay lots of attention to what you are putting in your mouth. If you are "allowed" 150 carb grams daily, do you also have a top number for the total calorie intake daily?

i learned about it when i contacted the diabetic association for literature re: diabetes

then i took the diabetes course at the local hospital

the dietician figured out how many calories and carbs i should be eating daily

i am almost 5 feet tall and was told 150 grams of carbs daily

about 45 grams per meal for me

all of the canned goods and boxed goods list the carbs per serving, and how many servings per container or the size of the serving

i also took out diabetic cookbooks from the library

they have great introductions that teach all sorts of stuff

i ignore the recipes

there are different types of carbs -- grains, fruits, milk etc

basically, you need a well balanced diet and you need to learn portion control

in the beginning, i had my measuring spoons and cups out and used them all of the time

i tend to eat the same thing most of the time anyway

example

breakfast: used to eat about 2/3 cup cereal, now i eat 1/3 cup cereal, with 1/2 banana, and 1/2 cup milk

might eat 1 whole boiled egg

or 2 egg whites

eggs do not have carbs, but they do have calories, egg whites have less calories than one egg

in the beginning had a hard time throwing out the yolks, but that's what i have to do

if i eat eggs for dinner, i will mix one whole egg with a couple of egg whites

eat the rest of the banana later in day

can also drink more milk later in day

used to buy those 100 calorie cans of fruit and eat the whole can, now i eat half the can save the rest for later

canned fruit -- in natural fruit juices, no sweetened fruit juices

one slice bread instead of 2, unless its the low calorie bread,

count the number of chips, pretzels etc

In the beginning it takes forever to shop, checking carbs, sodium levels, etc

i tend to ignore the calories

the goal was to keep my glucose under control

sorry for the long answer

Can anyone suggest a good/easy way to learn how to count carbs?

Pink/I will repeat what I've said often before and that is I do believe anyprescription for prednisone should be accompanied by a referral to adietician or nutritionist specializing in diabetes. Joyce has basicallygone on a diabetic type diet in watching her carbs. I would if I went onPrednisone. First, you're highly likely to get diabetes and even more soif you don't diet. Second, the weight gain is a real issue and takingany care you can from the outset makes sense. In addition to the direct impacts on health that prednisone can have, the doctors need to recognize and warn as to the others such as weightand mood swings. Perhaps if they did that better up front, people couldminimize the impact.>>> From: worth hope2thend (AT) yahoo (DOT) com>> Subject: Re: Dr. Oz> To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. . com> Date: Monday, December 14, 2009, 10:23 PM>>> Â>>>> Tell him I just started his diet plan, You on a Diet! Inorder to lose the weight I need to lose to get listed for myLung Transplant.> Â> C_53_Familial IPF_5/09, Washington>
