I had my tube taken out BEFORE I woke up, and I had asked ahead of time because

I was worried about that also. So ask, they'll be able to tell you what their

practice is

- - Yes, you might possibly have an NG tube but usually it is

for people who have upper surgery, because doing surgery up there

where it is very vascular (lots of blood vessels) can cause bleeding.

The blood gets down into your stomach, so the NG tube is there to

suction it out of your stomach. Don't worry - they will remove it as

soon as they see that you are no longer bleeding into your stomach.

Nothing to be too concerned with, as it's there to help you. It also

collects anything else in your stomach, and helps to prevent you from

throwing up. Don't worry - you will be just fine. Your Surgeon has

all this under control. ~~~ Diane (Idaho)-- In

I had an NG tube in post-op and boy was I thankful for it. If it

hadn't been for the NG tube I would have been vomiting up a lot of

blood. Basically the NG tube ensured that all the blood from my

stomach was pumped out. i was pretty freaked about having the tube in

too pre-op but after surgery I was happy to have it. They took it out

approxiamtely 14 hours after my surgery. It hurt but only for about

30 seconds as they pulled it out. The NG tube also helped me breathe

more easily immediately post-op.
