Guest guest
, Could you kindly elaborate on which foods you started her on from the SCD? In what amounts and how were they cooked? It is HIGHLY recommended to do the intro diet for 2-3 days before adding foods that are considered advanced (even in the method of cooking them). Please specify, so we can better guide you. This diet is truly helpful for those with Crohns, it would be a shame to let it go, just because the proper protocol was not adhered to. Do remember you as a parent have to be very strict to the legality of foods allowed on this diet, so proper healing can take place. She is at a decent start with no diarrhea or bloody stools. Just as an aside, SCD legal yogurt should be introduced in SMALL quantities in a day, start with maybe a teaspoon, then slowly build up the amount through the days. The yogurt is a pretty powerful probiotics source, let her system get used to it - don't shock it! If yo have not already read the BTVC book, do go through it thoroughly to help you understand the science behind it, and why certain rules have been laid out to better guide us all. Once her digestive system starts to heal she will gain weight even if slowly. Right now her gut is damaged, so there is malnourishment and loss of necessary weight. Eventually after some healing begins to take place, you may be able to decrease the doasge of hers meds and finally get her off them. Many have gone through this before. Slow and steady with the diet, lots of patience, and you will see results. Suneeti (Crohns, SCD 2000)
Guest guest
Hi , It is common to assume that we can eat all legal SCD foods from the beginning, but it really is a process. The pecanbread.com website has suggested stages to advance on SCD. It is a site for kids with ASD and they do not use cow milk products, but we can use legal ones if tolerated. The intro diet is important and after that, I would peel, de-seed, cook well and even possibly puree fruits and veggies for a while. I think at least a month or more is a decent trial for SCD. I hope she (and you ) feels better soon, PJ > > , > Could you kindly elaborate on which foods you started her on from the SCD? In what amounts and how were they cooked? Guest guest
,Usually one begins at the intro and adds foods slowly so that one can calm their symptoms and determine if the food is tolerated. Because you jumped in, you might have discovered one or more foods that has set your daughter's condition off. I would highly recommend beginning with the intro and going slowly making sure everything she eats is completely SCD legal - especially when making the yogurt. It is quite possible that some die-off is happening and it is manifesting itself as pain in her legs -- I recommend trying epsom salt baths (2 cups in a bath of very warm water up to her navel, really good at bedtime). For more info: http://epsomsaltcouncil.org/health_benefits.htm If she is having arthritis type symptoms, flaxseed oil (cold pressed and especially when mixed with SCD yogurt) is very good for inflammation and healing.Hope she feels better. How heart wrenching it must be to think you are helping when it hurts instead! AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Wed, October 20, 2010 2:52:12 PMSubject: Need advice new to group Hi, My daughter is 12, she was diagnosed with Crohn's about 18 months ago. It took 8 months to discover what she had because she didn't have typical symptoms. She was having leg pain. To this day she has no diarrhea or bloody stool. But she is so thin & appears malnourished. We started on sulfsalazine & the macrobiotic diet & within about 5 months her blood was normal so we took herb off meds & tried to manage with the diet. She just went on asacol about 6 wks ago cuz she regressed & we couldn't get it under control. The macrobiotics did help but never got her over the hump, she was always struggling with something. Yesterday we started SCD, we didn't start at the basics but jumped right into all the foods. Tonight she is in screaming pain & cannot walk, we are likely headed to the emergency room. I am not sure if maybe the dairy set her off? I am worried because I have read that this diet doesn't help with arthritis & her symptoms present like arthritis. She looks as if she is cripple & it is heart breaking. I am not sure if we should abandon the diet & go back to what we were doing. It has been impossible to find anyone like her with only these symptoms & if there is anyone out there with any advise we would be so grateful to hear it, please. We were so hopeful when we found SCD, it makes so much sense but maybe not for us? Thank you,
Guest guest
Thank you all so much for your words. I am embarrassed to say that we jumped right to peanut butter brownies, pineapple upside-down cake & pizza, all from SCD cookbook. We did do soup too & she has eaten quite a bit of cheese. Also she has been eating a lot of fruit, bananas & apples ( which she was already doing before starting this diet ). Also meat from local farmer with no sugar added, eggs & apple pancakes. My thinking was that she wasvdoing decent before we started so she would be ok. Obviously that was a huge mistake. She has not had any dairy in 18 months - that was just dumb. She has not had any sugar except from fruit. Her diet was mostly grains, veggies & small amounts of beef, chicken, turkey & fish before. She is a very picky eater so even though animal protein was not allowed on macro diet, we did it. We finally got her sleep about 4:45 am sitting up in a chair . Thanks again for your thoughts, we will go back to the beginning. Thank you, > > , > Could you kindly elaborate on which foods you started her on from the SCD? There are tons of endorphin receptors throughout theintestines and endorphins also help reduce low level pain - it is an excellent drug for allauto immune problems - such as both Crohn's and arthritis. You can join here and ask questions and research: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/lowdosenaltrexone/You can also take up to 3 DLPA pills a day (DL-Phenylalanine) to help boost theendorphins and keep them active. (This is a safe amino acid.)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhenylalanineLDN works best as a compliment to SCD - or a very similar kind of diet. Not all doctors know about it, so it can be a hassle at times to get a prescription, butwhen you join that group, they will send you a list of doctors in your area, in caseyour physician is unaware of it already.
