Guest guest
Hey there- if there is anyone out there that knows, what is the word on the street on the antibiotic Rifaximin? I have a pretty good list of antibiotics in terms of what is safe and what is not okay to take. However, this one isn't on the list? I don't want to take any antibiotics, but I am in the hospital and they want to use one for its therapeutic anti-inflammatory properites. Hmmm.... originially they wanted me to take cipro, but I refused. If I have to I think I can do flagyl (safe), but they also recommended Rifaximin. Thanks so much! -Joanna SCD 9/2009, CD 1992, Lots of IV prednisone
Guest guest
Joanna, The good thing about Rifaximin is that it stays within your intestines and doesn't get absorbed into the blood stream. If you Google it, you should be able to come up with the reason why, but it seems to be accurate. It is used often to treat SIBO Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth. I did do a course of it last year, and while it had some GI effects, it was definitely a lot easier on my system than other antibiotics. Guest guest
I think another name for it is Xifaxan. If so - I have been trying to get my insurance company to pay for a prescription for a few months now. I had wonderful results 2 years ago when I was on it for SIBO and I don't usually care for antibiotics. OT Need advice ASAP: RIFAXIMIN?!? Guest guest
I think it is related to Rifampin. I have heard this interferes with birth control pills, so know that if you take the pill- it may not be as effective, so you need to use a back up plan. I would pick this over Flagyl- which I think is the drug from Hell. PJ > > I think another name for it is Xifaxan. Guest guest
I was on Xifaxin for a couple of weeks this year. Good results with it. The doctor said it stays specifically in the gut and does not enter the bloodstream. Guest guest
A HUGE thank you to everyone for chiming in. I definitely feel better about taking the Rifaximin if I have to. It's horrible how they bully you into thinking you need something when you are hospitalized. And it's hard not to feel vulnerable and cave in. On a funny SCD note, I secretly threw out the multivitamin they gave me this morning and took my own And I am on a liquid diet so I took an orange and made my own watered down orange juice. I am such a rebel!!! -Joanna SCD 9/2009, CD 1992, Lots of IV prednisone
