Subject: Operation House Call Program

Operation House Call is a great opportunity to shape our medical

community by sharing our knowledge as families with medical students

training to become our doctors of the future!

A collaboration between the BU School of Medicine and ARC of Greater

Boston, third year BU medical students in the OHC program take one

class and make one visit to a family who has a member with special

needs. Student feedback has shown that they have considered their

participation extremely valuable in providing them with increased

sensitivity and awareness for the issues and concerns that families

experience. They voice gratitude for the families who volunteer.

A pair of students will visit a volunteer family for approximately 2

hours, partake in an informal discussion with the caregiver,

play time with the child and siblings, or possibly a walk to the

park, a pizza dinner. Caregivers talk about their experiences

and allow each student the opportunity to educate his or herself in

an environment that is not an office or a hospital. Students

learn much from the family's willingness to speak about daily

concerns, the joys and challenges of their lives, including the

need to build positive ties in the world of professionals. These

future doctors gain from an increased understanding of how

a family works to love and support their family member with special

needs.

If you would like to learn more about Operation House Call please

contact na Peyton, Coordinator, at johnsusanna@....

Because

of the students' location we reach out to families who live within

the Great Boston area, or close to the North Shore (Salem, MA) or

South Shore (South Weymouth, MA). Thank you!

megan, Emerence's mom
