I am guessing that either he hasn't hit a growth spurt yet or the changes are so subtle that you can't tell yet.

Sorry, I don't know much about surgery and I haven't read about any cases here that went forward. There was someone talking about pursuing surgery of the older plagio group, but I don't remember whether or not they followed through with it. I think that it has to be pretty severe and causing mutliple problems for the doctors to consider surgery.

Anyway, you might want to consider joining and posting your question to the older plagio group.

There is also a lot of discussion on that group about various alternative treatments that have been tried for kids that are too old to band (age 2 plus).

My son got his band at 17 mo. He is now 19mo and we haven't seen much improvement. We got the band late because so many Drs told us it would round out on it's own. It did not. We went with the band knowing it would not make his head perfect BUT we've seen such little improvement Im making an appt to see a craniofacial surgeon. his eye has become asymmetrical and his ears also. Has anyone reached this point and what is the outcome? Did anyone go with surgery? Thanks!

He has made very subtle changes and oddly enough, the bottom of his head popped out but the top right side is still extremely flat.

Thanks for the info! I appreciate it:)

Hi,

Sorry about your disappointment.  I agree with everything

wrote.   Please keep the helmet on to capture any remaining growth

within the next couple months.  Some alternative therapies to

investigate are osteopath, CST, chiro, PT, and NCR.  The key to any of

these treatments is to find a highly qualified practitioner.  The

practitioners I've spoken to all report that they obtain better results

before age 2.  Many of them say they've obtained improvement after age

2, but it takes longer.  So, the sooner you act the better.

Unfortunately, at this point I do not think you will find an easy fix.

We've been treating our 24 month old for a solid year, and I expect to

treat him several more months before hopefully being ready to put him

on maintenance.

I've also read on the older plagio group about people considering

surgery for severe cases, but so far nobody has reported the outcome.

Best,

Kathy, mom to 2 and 5.5, both now being treated for very

mild plagio

Actually, that is the kind of change that is typical of older babies. The bottom rounds out first. The top section doesn't change as much once they are older. The flat spot might get smaller, but it won't completely go away.

Hi,

I'm glad there has been some change.  Unfortunately, for us too the top

right is still flattened, and we have been at this awhile.  My son's

measurements have made it too normal range, and I still see that flat

area up high.  If we are able to get this area to round out, I most

likely will post about it on this or the older plagio group.  My son

also has ridged sutures, and my hope is if we can fix this, there will

be a little more rounding on the top right.

Good luck!

Kathy, mom to 24 months

Even kids I have run into in public who wore a helmet starting younger

often still have a flat area up high.   I've had a couple of mothers

come up to me and tell me their helmet stories, and then show me the

remaining flat area.  I'm still hoping with time, this area can at

least round out enough to become more symmetrical.

I am an OR nurse and I would STRONGLY encourage you to really think this through before going with surgery. I will not get graphic but if it is for cosmetic reasons only, then I would not do surgery for this reason. You would be putting your baby through too much just for symmetrical eyes and ears. enough said. Good Luck.
