Guest guest
What exactly does it mean if Ketones are in an RSS/SGA childs urine? I have never tested Liam's and am wondering if I should.

They're not normal for anyone and indicates that your body is starving, therefore using muscle and other tissue for fuel to survive. Diabetics can have problems with this. Guest guest
Dianne, Thank you for supporting what I wrote earlier. called me and was so confused because the nurse from the ped. office told her it was no big deal. I told her to go to the hospital anyway and she was waiting for her husband to get home. The ignorance of some medical professionals is just so frustrating. We have all lived this and know what it means and what it does to our kids. I wish that some of these people would just get down from their throwns and LISTEN for once. We have had to push for so long that now when we bring Max in, they just know to look at his chart for the protocol. I wish others did not have to go through what we did. It's just not right. Guest guest
Hi Jodi I know that frustration. We still get looks of complete ignorance when we mention Liam has ketones, its either has he got diabetes or ALL kids have ketones when they are sick. I have checked Cameron(nonrss son) for ketones when he has been off his food for 24hrs and he doesnt have ketones, Liam can be +++++ or very high(the stick is practically black) after 6 hrs with no food. We have to believe in ourselves more, which is very hard. I have yet to take Liam to hospital knowing he needs a drip and getting one without an argument. Your legacy to us is that earlier and earlier we are gaining the confidence to stand up for our kids. Guest guest
> > Dianne, > > Thank you for supporting what I wrote earlier. Not a problem. I'm not used to having responses so fast on a yahoo group list, so posted what I knew. I did make a second post and used the words keytone acidosis. That was the wrong terminology and is reserved for when blood serum has become acid from too many keytones. Diabetics get into this mess. I shouldn't have used those words, they just popped into my head and I typed them out without thinking. Back to lurk mode. :-) Dianne - Ian's grandmother
Guest guest
Dianne, You are NOT wrong about keto-acidosis at all!!!! I should have brought that up in my post, too. That is what happens when ketones area out of whack and very large. The child/person becomes acidotic, will begin to vomit and won't be able to keep any food down at all. We have been there so many times with Max that I have lost count. It would happen if he just went one night without his pump feedings. Dr. Harbison called it ketotic hypoglycemia. See, you did a good thing to mention it. I will have to remember to include it in my explanations. Thank you. Jodi Z
