Guest guest
Hi all, Had my surgical hooks put on yesterday - my ortho put in 6 extra ones. She also replaced the rubber rings around each bracket with fine wire, so the wire around my teeth is now individually wired to each bracket. She said this is so, just in case one pops off during surgery, they can see the wires on x-ray and retrieve them if necessary (but you can't see the rubber things that way). The fine wire around each bracket is actually more scratchy than the hooks, but all in all it's a very mild irritation. My friend took me for a glass of wine after I had them put on, and that helped numb my mouth just fine!!! Only three more sleeps until my surgery. The surgeon yesterday told me we don't have to do the genio afterall, because he is going to tilt my bottom jaw down, rather than simply push it forward. He showed me models of how it would look and it seems fine. I'm glad to have a couple of hours less in surgery and also less swelling likely with just having the bottom jaw moved forward. My surgeon and ortho are married! They are in the same rooms and often see me together, which is really great. They are both really lovely and I am really lucky to be in good hands! Will let you know how I'm feeling when I get out of hospital. They said I will stay in 3-4 days so they can give me pain meds and make sure I rest up (I think they know me too well, and want to make sure I'm not racing around working or something afterwards)! I'm ok with that, my insurance will cover it so I may as well relax and be looked after! Oh, weird question - I wear contact lenses that I keep in for 30 days at a time. Do you think I can keep them in for the surgery or will I have to take them out? I want to be able to see when I wake up, and I'm not sure how easy it will be to put them in again afterwards...anyone had this problem? Talk to you all in a week or so! . Guest guest
Hi , It sounds like you have everything well in hand. That must be nice to have such easy access to your OMS and OD at one visit! I am jealous! Sending you best wishes for your big day. Will be thinking of you and watching for your posts as soon as you feel up to it post op. Hugs, Fran > > Hi all, > > Had my surgical hooks put on yesterday - my ortho put in 6 extra > ones. Guest guest
Greetings, I always have to do a double check on your email to see if you are Sam or =) Hi , Thank you very much for your update. I'm heading to the OD in about six hours for my surgical wires. The last we talked, he said I would be getting about 14 (I think). I'll let you know how it goes. I plan to ask for a couple boxes of the silicon wax. I'll ask him about the rubber o-rings versus wiring each bracket. I also wear 30-day contacts, but not the extended wear; I take them out every night. It seems in reviewing my pre-op information, the OS said no contacts. I don't plan to wear my contacts the first couple of weeks into my recovery. Good luck! I'll be anxious to hear from you on the other side. Guest guest
If you have plain, old-fashioned eyeglasses, with lenses and frames, take them with you to the hospital. I would not want to have surgery with contacts in place, just in case... If you'd have trouble putting them back in, you don't need them in there when you swell. Fersure... As for the wire ties, I had them in most of my mouth in most of my time in braces. I actually preferred them to the o-rings, but the docs (or their helpers) can tuck down the scratchy ends, under the archwires. I can understand leaving off the non-x-ray-spottable o- rings for surgery, for sure -- you don't want one landing in a lung - - but once you're done with the OR, if they want to continue using the wire ties, a powerchain or o-rings on top can also cushion the scratchy stuff.
