Guest guest
SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA CELIACS....SEPT 2003 Support group meetings are held in Oakland, Santa Cruz, Sebastopol, Napa and at Stanford University. R.O.C.K. (Raising Our Celiac Kids) meetings are in Danville, Palo Alto, and San Francisco. Meeting notices are sent out monthly announcing upcoming events. You can receive an e-mail or snail mail notice. To subscribe, send your name, address, phone number and e-mail address to your local support group leader or to Martha Deutsch 341 Central Ave., Half Moon Bay 94019, 650-726-9562, deutschm@.... This list is confidential and will be used only to keep you informed of local celiac activities and important celiac concerns the group leaders wish to broadcast. Even if you do not participate in a group, all of the leaders are happy to answer your questions and refer you to other resources. You might be interested to know that there are currently over 600 names on our list. We welcome your ideas on what kind of support you believe is needed, what activities you might suggest, and of course any volunteer help you would like to offer! The group leaders work very hard and are always looking for others who are interested in making our gluten free lives more enjoyable. About expenses: We have decided not to ask for dues this year but have set aside some of the conference budget to pay for mailing and administrative costs throughout the year. Because many of you have e-mail, copying costs and postage are lower that they used to be. We always appreciate your support for the celiac cause, of course, and if you would like to contribute either money or your volunteer hours, please contact a group leader for suggestions. Thanks for your interest and your help! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - NOTES FROM STANFORD CELIAC CONFERENCE 2003 The conference last weekend was a great success with around 400 people attending. We had a full day of speakers, all local, and lots of food to keep us alert and ready to learn. We are fortunate to have so many excellent celiac resources in our Bay Area, including the impressive research team at the Celiac Sprue Research Foundation. Thanks go to these people and to all the wonderful volunteers who helped make this day possible! Rohlfs maintains a website at Stanford for our Bay Area celiacs and will be posting meeting information and other news on this site. She has posted the slides from Dr. Oren Abramson's conference presentation on Celiac Disease and Diabetes. http://celiacsupport.stanford.edu. We found two sweaters left at the conference. For return please contact Rohlfs: kellyr@... or 650-725-4771. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- SANTA CRUZ The Santa Cruz Celiac Support Group will be meeting on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 11AM in Meeting Room 1 at Dominican Hospital, 1555 Soquel Drive, Santa Cruz. (Located east of Highway 1 at the Soquel Drive/Avenue exit in Santa Cruz; Room 1 is located in the main hospital building near the outpatient entrance.) Joan Wade of Sylvan Border Farms will bring samples of her delicious gluten-free products to share. We will also have a gluten-free potluck lunch (bring a list of the ingredients). Gluten free refreshments will be provided. (Directions: We live in Barron Park, between Arastradero Road and Page Mill. Coming from Page Mill Road turn right onto El Camino Real going South. From El Camino Real turn right onto Los Robles Ave., at the corner of Blockbuster Video and Jamba Juice. On Los Robles go to first STOP sign. Turn right onto La Donna, then the first left turn onto La Para. We are #738 (blue house) on the right side in the back. Please park on the street.) Please RSVP to Fowell-Velez, kfowell00@... or 650-216-6405. Please bring a dish to share and let know in advance what you are bringing. We have a few allergies in the group in addition to gluten and would very much appreciate your understanding when preparing a dish to bring: there are two families with nut allergies and one with an egg allergy as well. If you can use an egg replacer and avoid nuts when baking, that would be great. If not, please label the dish and we will have those kids avoid the dishes with eggs and nuts. (Kim Czachor asked that no nut pieces, whole or parts, be used due to her sensitivity, but if a nut flour is used, her daughter can avoid that food. Please contact her if you have any more specific questions at czachor1@....) October Meeting: We will be meeting at the home of Gus and Becky Pinto in Belmont on Saturday, October 25th. Directions will follow as well as times and what to bring. Please mark your calendars! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- OAKLAND The support group will meet on Saturday, Oct. 11, 10:30AM-12:30PM at 1950 lin Street, Oakland.
