Clare - Congratulations on your successful surgery! Thank you for

the account of your surgery experience. I have yet to undergo my

procedures (upper and lower next June for an underbite), so all the

info I can read about actual surgery experiences will be of enormous

benefit to me. Hope you will be feeling better with each passing

day. Take care and relax - you've made it to the other side! Best of

everything to you.~~~ Diane (Idaho)

Hi Clare,

I am glad you are home and doing well. It sounds like your

experience, except for a few issues, went really well. Detailed

accounts really help those of us who haven't been through the

surgery yet. And it helps to know that even with a few glitches, it

turns out fine.

Will watch for your pics, and hope you are doing well today.

Hugs,

Fran

Hi Clare,

I have had 32 surgeries and I still get emotional and a nervous wreck when I go

down to the operating room. I had upper jaw surgery along with other stuff my

surgery lasted just over 14 hours. I was out of it for the first 4 days and when

I was more awake and tried to talk a few of the nurses would also just walk away

and that was so upsetting. When I told the surgeon he said that the nurses are

used to patient not being able to talk!

Hi Diane -

How are you doing with your braces? You had posted to one of mine a

while back and we were getting them on at the same time. My surgery

won't be until around Nov/Dec of next year so I have a little longer

than you but I know what you mean about reading lots of info and

personal experiences. Just figured I'd say hello. -Lori

Hello, Lori - So, how are you doing these days? How are your braces

treating you? I got my brackets in on July 26th, my spacers in on

Aug. 2nd, and my spacers out/the rest of the ensemble installed on

Aug.9th. At my first adjustment appointment on Sept. 6th, my OD, Dr.

Slattery, changed my wires from #14's to #16's because he was so

pleased with my progress. Well, my progress continues to please him

and yesterday, at my second adjustment appointment, he decided to

change them again. Now I have a #17 nickel-titanium wire on the top

and a #16 stainless steel wire on the bottom. Also, he put a

powerchain segment between my two upper front teeth and a powerchain

entirely on the bottom. He says it's time for space consolidation, so

he plans to close up my gaps except for the one on my lower left side

that was from my extracted tooth; that space will be saved for my OMS

to install an implant after my braces are removed, probably in early

2007. He will also be pulling my upper and lower teeth back plus he

plans to put bands on my second molars sometime before Christmas, but

I don't think I have any space for them so I guess I will be getting

those nasty spacers again - yuck!// I had my surgery consult (2nd of

2 appointments) on August 3rd. It was a question-and-answer session

and I brought lots of questions for my OMS, Dr. , to answer. I

will be going back to him in Dec. for a progress check-up and for us

to decide about my need for the LeFort (upper). If he only does the

BSSO to set back my mandible, a new problem will develop: my tongue

will be 7mm too long for my newly-shortened mouth. So, I've decided

that I want both procedures - let's just hope he agrees with me; at

my first consult with him, he was leaning in the direction of both. I

hate having all this up in the air!// Are your teeth moving like

crazy just like mine? It seems that my bite/teeth are different each

day. Those continuous force wires are great! Let me know how you are

doing, okay? Take care. It was nice hearing from you.~~~ Diane

Hi,

Everything here is going okay. I have decided to switch back to the

percoset/benedryl combo, even though it knocks me out for the entire day,

because at least I feel less uncomfortable. The Lodine made me very jumpy

and I was very uncomfortable. (I don't say that I am in pain ever, because I

don't think it is that. It is just that I feel intense intense pressure

around my upper jaw and get very bad headaches. Never sharp pain or anything

like that). Anyway, last night I couldnt really get to sleep on the Lodine,

so I waited until about midnight for it to wear off completely, and switched

back to the percoset/benedryl and was asleep in 5 minutes through the night.

Things are going smoothly, and I am hoping to see some decrease in swelling

today or tomorrow! I realize that keeping a good attitude about this is key,

but its getting harder and harder to stay positive when I just see my

condition getting worse. But I am sure that everyone goes through this, and

soon enough I'll see some kind of improvement :)

Hi Claire,

You might call your OS again, and see about getting something

specifically for the headaches and sleeping. I am usually

prescribed Ambien, and even with all my allergies, I have never had

a problem with it. And it resolves the sleeping issue. That is a

biggie. Just a thought.

I am glad you slept well last night. I agree with you, a positive

attitude is a big plus for any recovery period. Hang in there. You

are doing great!

Hugs,

Fran
