You know, my stoma has stretched a little and my doctor recommended the

" chicken fried steak " diet. This means eating foods that are bulky and tend

to fill the pouch up and keep it filled.

Foods that come to mind for me are fried chicken, chicken fried steak,

double cheeseburgers loaded, but with the bun throwed away (after one bite

to get the " whole " effect) Let's see, fried shrimp, grilled fish, grilled

steak, anything with hamburger meat, bulky vegetables that don't turn into

water like Brussels sprouts. Peanut butter or cheese on a really good whole

wheat cracker does the trick. Almonds are incredibly filling for some

strange reason....I like the smokehouse bought in bulk at a health food

store.

Although I can tolerate virtually any foods without problems,

including any kind of meat, there are a couple of things that I eat

but which don't always sit perfectly comfortably in my stomach.

Those foods actually tend to keep me from getting hungry too

quickly, maybe because of the slight discomfort they cause. Eggs

are often that way, and so is fish, oddly enough. For some reason

light fish like scrod is worse than heavier, oily fish like salmon.

Other foods with high fat can keep me fuller longer, including nuts

and peanut butter. Nuts can be a problem, though, since I *really*

like them and such a small amount is incredibly calorie dense. They

need a lot of disciplined portion control, which I don't always

exercise.

My typical breakfast has been cottage cheese with fruit and a bit of

high-fiber cereal mixed in. The last couple of weeks I've switched

to a heartier breakfast, often an " egg mcmuffin " : a piece of

Canadian bacon, a fried egg, and a half slice of cheese on a whole

wheat English muffin or toast. That's obviously higher calories and

a lot more fat than the fruit and cottage cheese, but it also keeps

me full much longer, to the point where I don't always get hungry

for a mid-morning snack.

Not food, but really pushing water or other fluids can delay my

hunger.

Any type of chicken or steak. If I have scrambled eggs and cheese

for breakfast, instead of a carb like cereal or bagel, I stay fuller

longer. Small amounts of pasta/rice fill pretty quick too.

Hi ,

For " bulky foods " , I try to think thick and dense for a fast filling stick to

your ribs kind of snack or small meal. Sometimes a slice or two of deli roast

beef or turkey, sometimes cheese and Canadian bacon with a little wholegrain

Dijon. Sometimes a hard boiled egg. A tablespoon of peanut butter on a couple

of Woven Wheat crackers (Trader Joe's version of Triscuit, but half the price).

If you still have room, maybe a couple of olives or the pickle of your choice.

I also occasionally like the full sized U-Turn, One-Way or Joyride bars.

Bread made with no flour, it made from sprouted grains and seeds and

it's wonderful. Very dense and chewy. It's real name is Ezekiel 4:6

from the verse in the Old Testament. You can get it a health food

stores (usually in the cold case or frozen), Trader Joe's and some

supermarkets in the frozen food sections. Runs anywhere (here, at

least) from $2.09 at TJ's to $3.50 at health food stores. And

according to the nutritionist that my surgeon uses it's a complete

protein. It comes in regular, sesame (my fav), cinnamon raisin (DH's

fav), and a low sodium. Think that about covers it!
