Guest guest
Well, this seems like another variation on my " What is 'tolerating' question that I don't think anybody's commented on. What do folks mean by " bloating " ? I gain 4 or 5 lbs. overnight when I eat SCD chicken soup for dinner and I think it's because I add a lot of salt. Guest guest
You may be experiencing some bloating after eating soup due to the veggies or meats used, but since you mention using lots of salt, that might be water retention instead [grin]. Different condition, although it can feel similar, but water retention will trigger a weight gain from the excess fluids. Bloating is a result of fermentation, either from eating a food that your body isn't able to digest completely, or from slow digestive motility -- or both. Gas (methane or carbon dioxide, can't remember which is the more predominant in humans) is one of the by-products of bacterial action, so fermentation increases the amount being contained within the digestive tract. With bloating you feel, well, bloated! Swollen, perhaps feeling pregnant -- your clothes are tighter, especially in the waist or central abdominal area. Depending on where the excess gas is located, you might belch more, or have more flatulence. Many times the excess gas is trapped in the small intestine, so can't emerge easily. With most folks, the bloating will come and go. And it usually clears up the longer you're on SCD. I have poor digestive motility in the upper GI, so deal with chronic bloating, among other things. I always buy clothes a size or two larger because I'm always bloated to some degree and my upper GI won't tolerate any pressure. Thanks to being on SCD my gut ecology has been restored, but food just moves slowly so there is always more fermentation than usual. It is one reason I don't eat many high-carb foods -- longer transit time, more bloating. Kim M.
