I had upper and lower 5 weeks ago and never had one of these infamous

splints in my mouth...which I found odd, b/c everything I'd read here

leading up to the surgery led me to believe that 100% of patients had

one of these things put in post-op.

Their purpose seems to be nothing but positive: i.e. keep the

bite/occlusion in perfect alignment...why wouldn't my OS have used

one? I asked him directly, but he dismissed me quickly saying " nah,

you didn't need one " .

Not everyone has a splint. Sweetpearl is one member who recently

had surgery and had no splint as well as -Caboose. So if you're

doing fine now at 5 weeks post-op without the splint I wouldn't worry

about it and thank your lucky stars that you were spared the agony of

splinthood. Some doctors like the splint others don't, just as some

like the rigid fixation technqiue and others like the wiring technique.

And some patients's cases just don't warrant a splint while others do.

No case is the same. We are unique in our particular jaw malfunction

and the type of procedure we require to fix it.

Hi I had no splint either! every case is different and some people

require a splint to hold things in place. You and I should consider

ourselves lucky to have not needed a splint. I was only banded and

feel another foreign object in my mouth would have been to much to

manage I am 6wks out today yeah (I think)! I had a Laforte I and BSSO

how about yourself?

Even though I haven't had my BSSO and LeFort yet, I think the splint

usage depends on the Surgeon AND his experience AND his training. My

OMS says I will have a splint for three to four weeks and also have

bands. He doesn't use plates, just screws. I think they are all

taught this surgery the same, but develop their own preferences once

they open their practices and do enough of these procedures and find

out what works for them and what doesn't. BTW, my Surgeon completed

his OMS Residency at Univ. of Nebraska Medical Center, which is one

of the best places to train for this in the country. He's also an MD,

and a board-certified Cosmetic Surgeon. Personally, using a splint

seems like a no-brainer to me; it keeps the jaws stable and, when

used with bands, prevent the jaws from moving, and therefore, help

the bones heal. I'm glad I will have it, but I understand they are a

pain to clean. ~~~ Diane (BSSO + LeFort - next summer)
