I had surgery yesterday: upper, lower, chin, restylane injection for upper lip.

I had surgery with Dr. Poor at Kaiser Oakland. Everything went very

smoothly. I can tell though, that the initial recovery will not be

exactly smooth, unless I keep myself drugged fairly well. As others

have pointed out, pain is fairly minimal--I would descibe it

as " discomfort " rather than pain. The swelling is annoying.

I vomited twice--congealed blood in the stomach from the procedure.

After I did this, I had a very hard time talking or breathing

through my mouth, but my nose has been clear so its not a problem--

just unnerving. Apparantly I'm having a hard time clearing the thick

blood from the back of my throat. Again, this shouldn't alarm anyone.

I'm pleased with the surgery, but can't tell yey what I'll look

like. I already was pretty pleased with my appearance. My take is

that I'll look pretty similar, but with some awkward edges gone and

a more pleasant mouth, and more " conventional " features overall. My

deviated septum also appears to have corrected, especially since I

can breathe through my mose and I no longer notice the nasal

crookedness.

Dr. Poor really did a great job. The nurses and others were very

helpful. I highly recommend those who are considering orthognathic

surgery and live in a Kaiser-providing area to obtain this insurance

and get it through them. It really, from start to finish, could not

have gone smoother. I live in Sacramento, and would also like to

recommend Dr. Talbot, my orthodontist. He has a lot of

experience with these cases and workign with Kaiser Oakland in

particilar, and his staff is pleasant, competent and accomodating.

Hi,

Can I ask you what you had done. Were your jaws moved forward, back....? Do

you know how much? I am thinking about having surgery and if I do have it, it

will be in Kaiser. I would be having upper and lower jaw surgery also.

I remember corresponding with someone who was going to have their surgery at

Kaiser but I don't know if it was you.

Hi ,

I think we did correspond. Honestly, I'm not sure the actual

milimeter dynamics of the movement. But I know that they moved my

upper jaw upward and forward and my lower jaw backward. I had an

underbite of about 5 mm.

I am having a hard time assessing the aesthetics of things so far

because I'm still pretty swollen, but I do know that my nose has

improved, and that's something that I was concerned about. My nose

was previously crooked and now it's not and I can breathe more

easily through it. I expressed to Dr. Poor that I was concerned

about it being up-turned by the surgery and he took that into

consideration.

Hello, I will be having lower and upper surgery next June to correct

my underbite. I am wondering how it felt when you woke up from your

surgery without your underbite. I have had my underbite for nearly

four decades and I don't remember having any other bite. I am rather

concerned about how it will feel to finally be underbiteless. I have

discussed this with my OMS, so he knows that I am concerned about

this. He says it will feel very strange at first, but I won't feel

the real change in my bite until the splint comes out three to four

weeks later. He says he will be there at my bedside when I wake up

from surgery and that I won't be going thru this alone, so that's

comforting.(my OMS is a real sweetie!) Thank you for any info you

can provide. ~~~~~ Diane (Idaho)

Diane,

Your doctor is right--you won't know what it feels like with the

splint in. I don't really feel aware of a " bite " at all right now.

As I am wired shut, I don't even have the clearest view of my teeth

in their new alignment. When I woke up I was so groggy that my bite

was the least of my concerns. They kept my doped up and fairly

oblivious. I really would not worry about the waking up process. It

won't really happen all at once.
