Guest guest
Hi. I got an infection when i had my wisdom teeth taken out. It consisted of white pussy stuff oozing out of my wound. It could also be removed with a q-tip, bit stank, and tasted absolutely disgusting!!! It was however unpainfull. I went back to my od, and he gave me some antibiotics which cleared it up straight away. If you white stuff smells, then it is probably infected, but you sould probably get it checked out anyway, as you don want to wait too long just incase it is infected, and it could get worse! Hope this is helpful Charlotte:) > I'm 6-days post-op from both upper and lower, and swelling is > gradually reducing. I think I've developed an infection of some kind > in my mouth. Guest guest
The patches of the white stuff make me think that you might have thrush. Anyone else? Guest guest
Sounds to me as though there's a good chance you have a yeast infection.... But you're right. The doc is the one to tell you. Yeast is easy to diagnose... A scraping or swab will show it under the microscope. And you may, if you have chilluns or a wife, know it as thrush, which often hits babies, or candidiasis, which is very unpleasant for women in their intimate areas, or in their armpits, under any body skin folds, or anywhere else it might strike. Yogurt, buttermilk and/or acidophilus culture may help fight it. Taken by mouth, not externally, far as I know. It often becomes entrenched after we've taken antibiotics, because the antibiotics kill off the usual bacteria we all carry that keep the yeast in check. (We all have yeast in our systems most of the time, but it's a matter of balance. Lowered resistance and stress can also bring out the yeasty beasties.) It's a nasty, often itchy and unpleasant, infection, and better to get rid of it sooner than later. The sugary diet may also be giving the yeast encouragement. If you bake bread, ever, you'll know that the way to proof baker's yeast (a different form of the same organism) is to put it in warm (body temp) water with some sugar, and watch whether it grows. It is usually pretty easily treated, although there is something called Gentian Violet that you can also use, available here over the counter, that's a really staining purple stuff. I've used it on yeasty skin infections, but it's a nuisance. If what you have is yeast -- and encourage your doc to look at it under a microscope -- there are easier oral meds that will wipe it out right quick, without everything having to turn purple! Sorry your doc doesn't believe in communication. That's dreadful! Just tell him that one of your internet buds raised the issue of whether it might be yeast, and maybe that will give him a prod toward digging out his microscope. If it is yeast, another antibiotic won't help, I'd guess, and might make things worse. But I'm no doc. Guest guest
After surgery there is tissue necrosis (dead gum tissue from surgery) that sloughs off and it sort a white/beige gunk. Also some times the suture site gets a white bump. I had two sutures that the OS had to remove. Last one being last Wed. (6 weeks post op). I thought I had an infection, but it was just the suture. Some of what you're seeing could be that. Salt water or peridex rinses help keep infection away and mouth clean. As others have said the white stuff on cheeks could be a yeast infection which sometimes occurs when we're on antibiotics. Using a small child toothbrush helps to get the teeth clean. Ask your OS as he's the best person to ask. I usually make a list of questions each time I go in to see my OS. Shirley
