Hello,

I have been wired shut for 5 weeks and will get unwired on Wednesday :)

Its not as bad as it seems...Im actually scared to get unwired since I havent

moved my jaw in so long..This is my 4th surgery and 1st wiring..my problem was I

grinded my teeth at night and my bone did not heal totally due to the

grinding...so my new surgeon said that by wiring me shut and doing a bone graft

this would make things stonger and heal better..he also said that he is from the

old school (older MD) andis use to wiring most of the time but the younger

doctors usually dont.hope this helps

but it depends on the procedures. There is a lower set-back

procedure called an IVRO or Intraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy that

requires the jaws to be wired shut. Alot of the time it depends on

the Surgeon's preferences as well. The reason I know about the IVRO

is because the Surgeon I went to for a Surgery consult back in the

early 1980's told me that he wanted to do that procedure, but I

would have to be wired shut for six to eight weeks so I said " no

thanks " . ~~~~ Diane (Idaho)

EXACTLY was going on but did bring up a question I have for the

group. My OM says that I will NOT be wired shut. The 2nd opinion

surgeon says that there is a 99.9 percent chance that I would have

to be wired. If he gets in to it and my bones are not strong enough

to handle the screws then I would be wired. I am getting upper and

lower surgery. I have partials now and will be eventually going to

implants on top and bottom. My question is:
