Guest guest
some background.. i had braces til i was around 18 years old. from the time i was around 17 i noticed that my lower jaw was extending more and more. the orthrodonist suggested that we wait and see what would happen and recommended surgery if it wouldnt stop. fast forward to today i have had the braces off for some time now (im 21) and my lower jaw has stopped growing from what i can tell. but it is around 4-5mm forward and my lower teeth are a bit off centered when compared with my upper teeth. i have trouble eating food, well more like i cant efficiently tear chunks of food.. but i have gotten used to it and have found that a knife and fork are pretty useful haha. i have gone to a couple orthrodonists for consulting and i am going to a surgeon tomorrow for advice. i want to get as much information as i can before making a decision. any help would be appreciated. thank you bryan
Guest guest
- Welcome to this group! I have an underbite too and will be having a BSSO (Bilateral Sagittal Split(Ramus)Osteotomy) to set back my mandible and a LeFort Maxillary Osteotomy to advance my maxilla and drop it down 2mm in front. I just got my braces on five weeks ago, so I'm just starting my Orthognathic Journey. I will have braces on for up to ten months prior to and up to six months after my surgery. This is the third time in the last twenty-five years that I have contemplated doing this, but this feels right this time. I have had functional problems with biting and chewing food, and also speech problems (people say I sometimes mumble). My OMS (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon) hasn't decided if he will be performing the LeFort procedure; he will be making that determination in Dec. He needs to study another set of xrays (cephalometric and panoramic) as well as examine my mouth to see if my teeth are being aligned in their arches, and he will take some measurements too. I hope that my story has helped you and given you some information. Good luck tomorrow at your appointment with your surgeon. Let us know how it goes. Take care. You've come to the right place.~~~~ Diane (Idaho) -- - In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " aznh2oman " <aznh2oman@y...> wrote: > some background.. i had braces til i was around 18 years old. from the > time i was around 17 i noticed that my lower jaw was extending more and > more. the orthrodonist suggested that we wait and see what would happen > and recommended surgery if it wouldnt stop. fast forward to today i > have had the braces off for some time now (im 21) and my lower jaw has > stopped growing from what i can tell. but it is around 4-5mm forward > and my lower teeth are a bit off centered when compared with my upper > teeth. i have trouble eating food, well more like i cant efficiently > tear chunks of food.. but i have gotten used to it and have found that > a knife and fork are pretty useful haha. i have gone to a couple > orthrodonists for consulting and i am going to a surgeon tomorrow for > advice. i want to get as much information as i can before making a > decision. any help would be appreciated. thank you > > > bryan
Guest guest
Hi ! I just wanted to let you know that I am basically in the same position as you, but with upper jaw problems. I had braces until I was about 15, before highschool started, but when they took the braces off, my front teeth started moving forward, back to where they had started. My ortho said it was b/c i wasn't wearing my retainer, but I was... So finally, last year, I went to a consultation appointment with an ortho, and he said i had jaw problems, and that is why my front teeth reverted back to their original position, and that even w/ braces again, they would probably go back. So surgery was the only way to permanently fix the problem. Basically I am the same as you, no major major problems besides minor TMJ and that I could never bite food off, would always use knife and fork... I am also 21, by the way, and having braces in college (not sure if you're in college or not...) is tough, tougher than i imagined it would be! The only advice I would offer, is that if you are graduating in May, like I am, surgery then would be a lot easier to deal with! Definitely get as much information as you can, especially how far orthodontics could take you without surgery. My surgery is scheduled for October 3rd, but it has been canceled repeatedly and my insurance is still denying coverage... so i'm not sure if surgery is going to happen for me at all, b/c of all these exterior issues! Anyway, goodluck, and feel free to ask me anything! Clare > > - Welcome to this group! Guest guest
Hi , I know, it is a difficult decision to make isn't it? I think this board will help you a lot in making that decision. If you go back through a few days worth of posts, you will get a general feel of how the board works and the types of issues that are dealt with. I think I came to the board for a few months prior to my final decision. Just by following along with the board, meeting the other members and sharing their experiences, it gives you are really good feel for what this involves, what kind of recovery you will likely encounter - and that can be major, and what are some of the outcomes that people can experience. It is really helpful. Plus it helps you ask more specific questions of the OD's and the OS when you get to those stages of the actual decision. And sometimes the board is just a good place to sound off and vent. I did that recently when I got my braces on! I really feel for you having done this already! I have wayyyyyyyyyyy more respect for anyone I see in braces now. Welcome to the board! I think you will really like it here!
