Guest guest
Whatever your surgeon does is best. Usually you don't have a choice in the matter, unless you decide to make this a criteria and surgeon-shop on that basis (I wouldn't). Having said that, my surgeon doesn't wire, he only fixes with plates & screws. He believes that's better for the recovery, as being wired doesn't give the muscles a chance to get used to the new position, and they snap back when released (which can cause relapse - jaw muscles are very strong). Being banded (with plates & screws fixing the jaws) means the muscles can move a bit and get used to their new positions. > > Hi all, > > I was curious on how many of you had this (screws & plates) done and > if you think its better to do this procedure or go the wiring shut > route? > > Thanks! >
Guest guest
- Thanks for your input. I have not met with my surgeon for almost a year, as I still am going through my braces stage. My surgeon did say he would be going the plate & screws route, but I swear he mentioned that I could be wired shut for a longer period of time. Like I said, I haven't seen him for almost a year, so I might be a little fuzzy on the info I was given. (Met with him pre-braces). I was unaware you usually do not have a choice. I was leaning on the plates & screws in the first place, considering that is what my surgeon is leaning against. I was curious on how many of you have gone through this, but apparently it is not that common to be wired shut only. FYI: I believe I am getting a Sagittal Split Osteotomy done. I should be meeting with my surgeon within the next couple months to go ahead with the surgery. > > > > Hi all, > > > > I was curious on how many of you had this (screws & plates) done and > > if you think its better to do this procedure or go the wiring shut > > route? > > > > Thanks! > > >
Guest guest
Hi, My appointments with the surgeon pre-op were far apart as well - I had my original consultation in 2000, and then didn't see him until exactly one week before surgery in Aug of 2002, for the pre-op molds, measurements, photos, etc. I didn't know what to ask him in the original consultation as I knew nothing about this surgery. I asked a lot more questions just before my surgery, but some of the things I assumed after reading posts here just weren't the way things were done here. No wiring, no catheter (surgery of 3.5 hours), for example. The main thing is the trust you have in your surgeon. I had very good feelings about him, and excellent recommendations by my ortho, who only works with this surgeon. If you're concerned about anything, though, you might consider contacting your surgeon to ask more questions. You might have to book another appointment, but it could save you from worrying needlessly for months on end. > > - > > Thanks for your input.
