Guest guest
Howdy all, 5 weeks out from BSSO/ Leforte two-piece and am experiencing some movement of the upper segments. I noticed it when one of the teeth nearest the osteotomy moved, like a kid's loose tooth. Then when biting down I could feel the initial contact, and further movement beyond that made me check the mirror again. My teeth all the way back to the molars move up when pressed. Not just single teeth movement but the whole segment is moving, I can see the other teeth go up as well when I press on one. Not pressing very hard at all. Should this be happening? Do I need to put a call in to my doc or am I just being paranoid? Thanks all,
Guest guest
Hi Kirstin, I had exactly what you are describing after my surgery. I noticed that type of movement 6-8 weeks post-op. I had just started seeing ortho again. When I discussed it with my surgeon, he had me stop wearing all the rubberbands to decrease the pull and pressure they created on my upper jaw- especially when eating and talking. I was told to Try to not clench my teeth together and instructed to not press on them together or with my hands. I was instructed to -as much as possible- leave them alone! I was put back on a soft diet and had to stop " biting " into things like a cookie or pizza. My surgeon said my upper jaw was very very fragile and the connection between the bones was still fibrous at that point allowing some of the movement I was observing. He said my jaw needed some extra time to solidify, so the more I could prevent the upper jaw from that extra movement the better and sooner it would be able to heal solidly. I would definitely call and see your surgeon to discuss it with him. He knows best- what his work was and the situation with your particular mouth and case was. In the meantime, you could make a point of eating soft food and stop pressing on the teeth until you can see him and show him. One of my problems that inhibited faster healing is that I am a clencher/grinder. I started back clenching and grinding two weeks post op which was very painful but I couldn't help it. That continual and repeated pressure on my upper jaw prevented the jaw healing solidly sooner because I kept moving it inadvertently. My surgeon also said that his experience has shown that people with very fair complexions (Like myself) tend to be more delicate skeletally- thinner bones I guess. I am a rabid milk drinker and have never accidentally broken any bones... but regardless they were thinner. I urge you to have your surgeon check your mouth and bite to make sure that it is still on target. My surgeon explained to me that with my specific plates and screws (resorbable), it is possible to have that movement because they have some flexibility...I guess metal plates can get bent and then hold your jaw to heal in the wrong position. Your surgeon can also check the lower lip and gums to see what is happening with that. Please let him know what is going on with your healing! Anyway, I will be 6 months post-op Sept. 9th. My upper jaw eventually did heal in its own time. I was told that by this point, if it wasn't healed, I would possibly need a second surgery to graft bone from my hip. (Hearing that certainly didn't help decrease my stress grinding and clenching at night!)Fortunately it finally cooperated. I've just had a huge delay in post-op ortho work. Oh well! Good luck and let me know how it goes for you! Katja > Howdy all, 5 weeks out from BSSO/ Leforte two-piece and am > experiencing some movement of the upper segments. Guest guest
Thank you very much for your reply, Katja. I am glad your jaw healed up correctly. I'm off to call my surgeon. Thanks so much for passing along your experience! > > Howdy all, 5 weeks out from BSSO/ Leforte two-piece and am > > experiencing some movement of the upper segments. Guest guest
Hi there, I called my doc and although he wants to keep an eye on it he doesn't seem to be worried. He is trying to equalize my bite with heavy bands and wanted me to keep them on until next week when I can see him. He said a little " flex " is alright at this point in the game, it is still too early for the bones to have solidified. I have been on a no-chew diet since the surgery, but I am a clenching/grinding champion at night, and will do what I can to cool it down. I will take everyone's words and advice to heart and keep an eye on the movements. Thanks again, > Howdy all, 5 weeks out from BSSO/ Leforte two-piece and am > experiencing some movement of the upper segments. Guest guest
Hi , I'm glad your doctor isn't alarmed. Sounds like your situation is very similar to mine -esp when you mentioned that you also are a professional clencher and grinder I'm sure the surgeon will mirror the same opinion when he sees you next week. Take care, Katja > > Howdy all, 5 weeks out from BSSO/ Leforte two-piece and am > > experiencing some movement of the upper segments.
