Guest guest
Austria, My OMS told me that an average woman opens her mouth between 43 and 45 mm. Right now at 3 months post op I can fit in my mouth about 2 and half fingers, 3 if I use my pinky which I believe is about 30mm. My OMS told me that with time I'll be able to open my mouth wider and wider but only up to about 40mm which sounds fine to me. Before I think I was close to 50mm (I too did the fist in mouth experiment...teenagers, huh?!. I know some doctors recommend doing some stretching exercises but my doctor seems to think that whether I do the exercises or not I'll end up opening my jaws the same width within the same amount of time. Anyway, that was my doctor's 2 cents. Hope this helps and keep up the good recovery. Sara > Hey All, > > I was wondering what is the normal width to open your mouth. Guest guest
hey austria, i'm going on 8 wks post op and was up to 25mm when i went to my OS two weeks ago, I think i'm up to about 30mm now...before surgery i was at 53mm and my dr seemed to think that was unusually large...apparantly i set a record at his office...lol...he wants me to get back up to at least 40 but preferably closer to 50 since i was at 53 before....i think around 40-45 is normal....i'm kinda stuck where i am right now...it feels like my muscle on the left side has spasmed and doesn't want to stretch out...hoping it loosens up before i go back to my OS though...don't want to have to have him stretch it out for me....hope that gives some insight! --ashley > > > Hey All, > > > > > > I was wondering what is the normal width to open > > your mouth. Guest guest
Hi, I am a little over four months post op I can only open my mouth 17mm and can't even get 2 finger's in. I have been using TMJ spatulas to try and improve my mouth opening for the past two months aiming to fit another spatula in each week. I could open 20mm two weeks ago. --------------------------------- Yahoo! for Good Click here to donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Guest guest
This is so funny. When I was a teen I could do the same " party trick " . My jaw unhinges now, but it hurts. Yes, I did just try it. HAHA I'm not sure about your question, but I'm sure someone out there knows. This group is an abundance of knowledge.
