Crystal - Welcome to the group! I have an underbite too, and will be

having a BSSO (Bilateral Sagittal Split (Ramus) Osteotomy) for

mandibular set-back and a probable LeFort Maxillary Osteotomy to

advance my maxilla and drop it down in front. I just had my braces put

on last Tuesday and will be in them up to ten months before surgery

and up to six months after. My surgery will be sometime next summer.

My teeth have already moved alot, so I'm hopeful that my teeth will be

aligned in their arches and I'll be ready for my surgery sooner. I,

like you, am anxious to get this done quickly; I'm 47 so I've had my

underbite quite a while longer than you've had yours. For me, function

is the principal reason for having this done now; I've been having

problems with mastication and speech for the past few years. The whole

process began in May with my need to have an abscessed tooth

extracted. My dentist referred me to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

(OMS); I felt so-o at ease with him that I told him the day of my

extraction that I wanted to get my underbite fixed and that I wanted

HIM to do it. He referred me to an Orthodontist (OD) that he had

worked on other cases with, and I made an appointment with him. I got

my Ortho work-up & consult in June, and got my ceramic brackets on in

late July. Spacers went in a week later. My OD and my OMS are both

really wonderful; I'm so lucky to have found them. My insurance thru

my employer (a hospital) doesn't cover the surgery, and only pays for

$1K of the braces. My OMS has surgical privileges at a small short-

term hospital here, so that's where my surgery will be done. My

hospital is way too expensive ($10K per procedure as opposed to $6K

for both), and I've worked there for twenty-five years! So much for

taking good care of their employees! I live in Idaho, by the way.

Well, hope things get going really fast for you. Let us know how the

OD consult goes! You are not alone; you are in a wonderful group of

caring supportive people. Again, welcome! ~~~~ Diane

---Hi Diane, my name is katie and i am new here as well. i will be

having the same surgery as you are sometime in ocotber or november.

I am excited but scared. I too work at a hospital and my insurance

covers everything 90%. Also i wanted to let you know that i am 34

and have waited a long time to correct my bite as well. I have had

braces for 1 year now and i did want to tell you that your bite will

get worse from the braces.. All just to prepare the teeth for their

new placement. Just letting you know because no one warned me ahead

of time. Great to hear from you.
