Guest guest
Virginia, I had a bone graft taken from my hip to fill in the gaps in my jaw during jaw surgery. I was numb for several weeks but I also had cheek bone and nose surgery the same time. I did have full feeling back in my face about 3 weeks post-op but it was very sore/tender and painfull. I had a local anesthetic injected into my cheek bones a two weeks ago and it took two days for the numbness to go away --------------------------------- Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page
Guest guest
Hi , Thank you for your reply. I didn't think local anethesia could last so long. When I've had root canals in the past, the anesthesia has always disappeared in a just a few hours. Right now I have ice- packs wrapped around my head to keep the swelling down (my gums were opened up from the back of my jaw, all the way to my eye teeth, on both sides of my lower jaw). Earlier yesterday I was thinking I just may go ahead with the surgery after all....because this procedure didn't seem all that bad. And now that I have the braces are off, my lower teeth are sunk back so far from my uppers....looks weird. Knowing what you know now, would you do it all over again? Thanks, Virginia > Virginia, > > I had a bone graft taken from my hip to fill in the gaps in my jaw during jaw surgery. Guest guest
Hello, I didn't have a bone graft, but I did have the lower jaw advancement (at 8mm) a month ago. My surgeon stressed to me that I had absolutely NO nerve damage what-so-ever...but yet my entire chin and bottom lip are still numb. From what he (and other people) have told me is that moving the jaw puts pressure on the nerves, and although it could take months, the feeling will return. I know we didn't have the same procedure, but I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you. -Ash
Guest guest
Hi Virginia, I didn't think that local anesthesia could last so longer either but i'm glad it did! I would go through the surgery again without a doubt even knowing what I know now. My recovery hasn't been the easiest recovery but I would go through with it again as it made a big difference to me. I might be having some of the plates and screws removed in the next few weeks and my lower jaw moved. --------------------------------- Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page
Guest guest
Ash, Thanks for the reply. My doctor said I should have had feeling back this morning, but as yet the feeling has not returned. I've called his answering service to see if he has any recommendations. Has your doctor prescribed any medication which would help pursuade the nerve return to normal? I have been on this web site in the past and there are a few people that indicate the numbing never goes away. I probably wouldn't be so concerned....but my doctor said I should be back to normal today, as he was clear of all the nerves. I sure hope he didn't accidentally slice the nerves when he was doing all the cutting. Thanks for your reply. I sure hope this is just short-lived side effect.
