You can get tattoos over scars, but it's best to wait 18 months or 2

years so that they will " calm down " and settle into their final

configuration. It's really important to find a tattoo artist who has

experience tattooing scars, because it's a very different kind of work

than tattooing plain skin, and the work is demanding, especially if your

design covers both scar and skin. I can't wait to get my scar tattooed,

but I am still waiting, and my plastics/reconstructives were 07/22/02.

My plastic surgeon (Dr. Egrari in Bellevue, WA) says absolutely no

tanning of scars for 18 MONTHS after surgery. In fact, he has us wearing

sunscreen all the time on the scars for 12 months. This sounds

excessive, but it's no big deal once it's a habit, and his long-term

post-ops look fantastic, much better than the ones I've seen that have

challenged their bodies and the scars sooner. Dr. Egrari has worked with

many WLS post-ops and is the preeminent bariatric reconstructive surgeon

in the Seattle area. He is very concerned about the quality of our skin,

and says we need to be extra careful with it for the rest of our lives,

since it's already been stressed and damaged by being stretched so much

when we were big, and since many of us have enough fat malabsorption to

have problems adequately protecting our skin from the inside.

tattoo question

I was wondering can you get a tattoo over a scar? I had my lower body

lift on 9-29 and would like to get a vine and flowers over it or even

zigzag across it....can you tattooo over it?

Also when can you tan after surgery? My surgeon was sent to Iraq so he

isnt avail for Q's

Find someplace you trust to get the tattoo done and ask them. They'd probably

know better than your doctor. I have two tattoos, one in front and one in

back, and I'm thinking I'm going to lose them both when I get my LBL work done

and I'll want to replace them later on.

I've been told the ink 'runs' on scar tissue or sometimes just does not

'take'. but then some artist will not do necks, feet, etc. while others do

so it's probably a matter of opinion.

with tanning - same thing - I've been told 3months and 12months so go

figure - depends on who you ask.

I do tattoos as a hobby. I've been doing it for 2 years now. Scars can be

tattooed. It would be more difficult on a thick wide scar. Make sure you go

to someone with a lot of experience. After 2 years, I wouldn't be ready to

make that attempt. The skin would be very tender for you and very difficult

for me. The skin must be stretched tight. Do wait until your scar has

completely healed. I would really give it a year. Also when you do get

tattooed, Keep sunscreen on it as well. The sun can bleach the color

especially the first year.
