Guest guest
Amy: I just had my palate expanded on 7 Sep of this year. So essentially I am 6 weeks post op. I know exactly the feeling you are talking about. I still have the same numbness. It is slowly going away, but it is kind of slow. I actually appreciated the numbness, because without it, you would have a great deal of pain. So it is hard to understand, but I appreciated the numbness. From the surgery date until now I have gotten back some feeling. So it is going away, but it just takes time. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any additionally questions about the recovery. Thanks! > > I am two days post op from having my pallet expansion and wisdom teeth > removed. Guest guest
Thanks for your reply . I am glad to learn that the numbness is part of the experience. Its good to know that it takes time for the feeling to come back. I am struggling with how to keep my teeth and expander clean. My OS has said not to worry, just brush as I can. My husband has been giving me only liquids and all blended cold food, so I guess I shouldn't worry about the brushing too much. I'm sure I will have other questions soon. Right now its just a struggle to keep on top of the pain meds and the swelling. I appreciate you getting back me and wish you the best in your recovery also. take care, Amy > > > > I am two days post op from having my pallet expansion and wisdom > teeth > > removed. Guest guest
Hey Amy, I'm 2 and a half weeks post op from pallate expansion and I have numbness too. I can't feel my upper gums except for pressure. When you have a type of surgery like that, you should expect numbness because they have to cut your nerves to get to the area(s) they need to operate on. I had my molars out a year ago but I don't remember having any numbness other than the novocain they gave me. Your nerves will grow back; I'm not sure how long it takes for them to grow back all the way but it takes time. So yes, once the numbing medicine wears off you should still have some numbness but like I said, you will be able to feel everything again in time. If you have any other questions or anything, please don't hesitate to ask! > > > > I am two days post op from having my pallet expansion and wisdom > teeth > > removed. Guest guest
I am really relieved to hear that the numbness in the gums and teeth are normal. I don't see my OS until Thursday. When I called the office, they said that the numbness should wear off and must have meant the novicaine. How soon before you were able to turn your expander? My OS has already done some expansion, my teeth no longer overlap and I have a small gap in the front. I was told that I won't turn until my appointment next Thursday. Is this tricky to do? I'm still a little unsure about what to expect. I hope this does get easier. Right now, I just am coping with swelling, pain and feeling tired. I was really happy to eat mash potatoes and spaghetti -o's today. I was really tired of just liquids and the meds were making my stomache upset. Glad to hear there are others who also going through this process. Thanks for reasurring me and being available for questions. This means a lot. Guest guest
Similarly to you, my surgeon turned my expander day of surgery and I too had a small gap between my teeth. A week after my surgery I visited my ortho and surgeon and they were happy to hear things were doing okay. Both ended up turning my expander that day. It doesn't really hurt. Every turn is 1/4 a mm and you feel some pressure because the expander is up against your teeth and all. So every day I turn it twice and the gap is getting bigger slowly. Turning's pretty easy. You have this weird looking key and it fits in a hole in the expander and you fit the key in the hole and push back until you see the next one (kind of tricky for me). That is one turn and you don't notice much because it's only 1/4 a mm but soon your gap will get bigger. That's really all there is to it. Good luck with it and your recovery! > > > > > > > > I am two days post op from having my pallet expansion and > wisdom > > > teeth > > > > removed.
