Guest guest
-Sam - I've never heard of anyone using the Invisalign braces as an option for Orthognathic Surgery patients before - interesting! I have the ceramic braces, as they were the same price as the metal ones at my OD's office. I wanted the least obvious option, and since I'm not a teenager, thought the ceramic kind was the right choice for me and my OD agreed. My OMS has done surgeries on patients with both ceramic and metal types and has had no complications or problems with ceramics. ~~~~ Diane (Idaho)-- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " sammyara1977 " <sammyara1977@y...> wrote: > So I recently had a consult with an ortho. that I have decided to use > for my braces. Guest guest
Hi Sam, I wasn't a candidate for Invisilign. My ortho does do Invisilign, but apparently for what he needed to do with my teeth, Invisilign wasn't adequate. I have ceramic braces actually. A lot of people here have ceramics... it seems to be a pretty decent split on this site between ceramic and metal. Just depends on preferences, recommendations, costs, etc. Some surgeons don't recommend having the surgery done with ceramics... for surgeons it isn't a concern. I had ceramics for my surgery. A lot of people, not everyone though, need a decent amount of ortho done prior to surgery, so the braces vs. invisilign may simply be a function of that. To my knowledge, invisilign is more expensive and if you need the braces ultimately, some of us may simply be utilitarian and not see the point of bothering with an intermediary and more expensive route to end up ultimately in the same place anyway. A lot is just a matter of personal choice!!! I chose the ceramics for cosmetic reasons. Some people don't have those worries/reservations/concerns. I did and the minor extra expense was worth it to me to feel more comfortable overall in braces. I am the self-conscious type anyway! So, maybe it's just a matter of personal comfort. I of course already spent 2 1/2 years in metal braces in high school when everyone was already out of braces and then went to university with the retainer that has the thick metal wire running across the front of your teeth... so I had had enough of feeling uncomfortable and not very confident with obvious metallic oral accoutriments!! I know that some orthodontists do not charge more for ceramic braces. For most, however, I think the ceramics may be more expensive. They were for me... considering the entire cost of the braces, the difference wasn't significant and as I said the advantages outweighed my concern about cost. Cost maybe be a definite deterrant (sp!?!). Coverage and cost for this surgery can vary widely.... thus many of us are already facing huge costs to undertake the surgery.... the added unnecessary expense of ceramics may simply be too much when some people aren't sure how they are going to pay for any of this. Anyway these are just some of my thoughts to answer your questions. I hope they are helpful as you make your decision! Good luck!
