Guest guest
Hi Liana. Welcome to the group. I was 12 when i first found out i needed surgery. I was fitted with braces when i was 13. I had 2 surgeries. The first was to remove my widsom teeth which was about 3 months before my jaw surgery. I had upper, lower, RPE and sinus work on the 1st of august 2002 when i was 17. At first i said that i wouldnt have the surgery done. Basically through sheer fear, at 12 years old when you hear that you need your jaws broken, instinct Run a mile! I dont think that i actually decided YEs i am having this i just guess i worked towards it. My surgery was to correct a class III underbite. My surgery was 7 and 1/2 hours it should have been shorter though my braces broke and they had to repair that. I was in hospital for 4 days. I was on a liquid diet for 6 weeks and a MUshy diet for the following 3 months. I had my train tracks braces removed 6 months after my surgery though they were replaced with a retainer (removeable brace). i had to wear this for a yr and now at age 20 i still need to wear it but only on a night. I was told that i would need this retainer until i am 30. I havent heard of others wearing retainers for so long, perhaps its jsut the way my ortho works. I didnt really have the option of just having the braces and not the surgery as my jaws were so misaligned to start off with that they could not be corrected with just the braces. From my experience surgery to have my wisdom teeth removed was far more painful than my actual jaw surgery. The worst thing from the jaw surgery was the food. But it was worth it. I have no regrets from my surgery and i would do it again if i had to. There is a wide age group on the boards so i am sure someone will be able to help you from within your age group. I hope i have been a help in some way. Kind regards Kat_UK > Hi, > My name is Liana. I'm 33 years old and I just finished a battle with > Cancer and now I want to pursue with braces. Guest guest
Hello, Liana - Welcome to this group! I am a 47 year old who has a Class 3 malocclusion, otherwise known as an underbite. I haven't had my surgery yet, as I just had my braces installed 2.5 weeks ago. This is the third time in the last twenty-five years that I have considered undergoing this surgery. The first time was in the early- 1980's; I wasn't ready to do this for ME, just wanted to get my parents off my back. The second time was in 1997; I was referred to a real jerk (putting it mildly) of a surgeon. He told me that it was up to HIM what surgery procedures I would be having, and he told me that I would have to have both upper and lower done but gave me NO explanation as to why. So, in despair, I gave up pursuing getting my underbite fixed. This third time I was referred to an OMS for the extraction of an abscessed tooth. I work at a large hospital and know most of the MD's on staff. When this OMS walked into the exam room, our eyes met and we both laughed in unison; we had seen each other in the hospital but had never met until this moment. He asked me what I was there to see him about and I told him that I needed to have a tooth extracted, and I wasn't there for the surgery he would love to perform on me; I then showed him my underbite and he said he would indeed love to fix my bite. Well, we actually discussed my underbite more than we discussed my extraction. I felt so-o-o at ease with him. So, on the day of my extraction I told him that I had decided to pursue having the surgery and wanted HIM to perform it: he was very happy with my decision and referred me to an Orthodontist. My OD is awesome; now I'm in braces and will be for up to ten months prior to surgery and up to six months afterward. My Surgeon is a wonderful, compassionate and caring man, and I trust him completely. I have had two consult/discussions with him; he won't be sure if he will be performing the upper procedure called a LeFort until six months prior to surgery, but he will definitely be doing the BSSO (Bilat. Sagittal Split (Ramus) Osteotomy) to set back my mandible./ I'm telling you all this because I wanted you to know that making this decision to go forward with all this didn't come easily to me, but I now feel that THIS is the right time to do this. I feel this may be God's will, because I finally have the right OMS and the right OD taking care of me and I feel truly blessed to be under their care. Now I'm just excited and anxious to have the surgery performed as soon as I can get my teeth aligned in their arches./ Well, I hope I answered some of your questions. ~~~ Diane (BSSO and Poss.
