Guest guest
Hi , I may be overriden by a moderator, but I'm relatively certain there are no issues with cabbage juice begin legal. I think it is advanced, however, and it would be recommended that you don't introduce it too soon (and watch for problems when you do). Also, it is usually recommended to dilute juice, at least early on. It wouldn't be legal to take the bacteria as a supplement, but naturally in the food it originates from, no problem. Very interesting about the bacteria. Ellen > > Oxalobacter formigenes is a bacteria that lives on cabbage leaves and is apparently superb at degrading oxalates. I have recently learned of a juicing method (cabbage, carrot, and apple) that enables the bacteria to colonize colons (where it currently seems to have little presence in modern adults) and solve oxalate problems. Since cabbage is a legal food on SCD, would the juicing of cabbage for the purpose of getting this bacteria to colonize the colon be legal? I don't want to post more details if oxalobacter formigenes is considered an illegal bacteria. > , mom to >
Guest guest
Juicing cabbage is certainly legal- in fact, a few months ago there was a discussion about having cabbage juice every day to help with UC. I am really curious to learn about this- please explain more! I just had my second kidney stone so I am always looking for ways to help degrade oxalates! -Joanna > > Oxalobacter formigenes is a bacteria that lives on cabbage leaves and is apparently superb at degrading oxalates. Guest guest
Ok, I think this will be of interest to anyone who has issues with oxalates. It comes from Tamaro of the K Protocol list. It is a way of getting oxalobacter formigenes--a bacteria that lives an cabbage leaves and seems to not exist in the colons of modern adults—to colonize the colon. says that oxalobacter formigenes is superb at degrading oxalates. Keeping in mind that on SCD any juice needs to be diluted at least 50%, here is her method: " For 4 people, juice 16 carrots, 4 apples, and 1/2 to 1 head cabbage depending on its size. Do this twice a week, and then on 1 or 2 other days make the juice but without the cabbage. For most kids the Oxalobacter formigenes should implant after 2 or 3 rounds, but for kids with very bad dysbiosis it may take repeated juicing to get the Oxalobacter to implant. " will be adding oral Epsom salts to her revised protocol (designed for autism). " The oral Epsom salts flushes oxalate out of the cells; the body deposits it into the intestines for disposal; and the cabbage bacteria break it down. " I do not know if the Epsom salts would be necessary for any BTVC listmates with oxalate issues. I do think the juicing/colonizing would be worth a try. I have noticed the recent thread on another list regarding goitrogens and so I asked if I should avoid this cabbage juice due to being on thyroid meds. She said I might want to limit mine to once a week. She has not increased iodide intake in her family (they do take iodide anyway because of the K protocol) to counteract the goitrogens in the raw cabbage. Hope this helps somebody. , mom to > > Juicing cabbage is certainly legal- in fact, a few months ago there was a discussion about having cabbage juice every day to help with UC. Dr. Haas recommended sauerkraut. Since sauerkraut would have that bacteria in it since it's present on the cabbage leaves, I'd say it is legal. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
