Iron supplements

My 15 yo son with UC just had blood work done and we found out this morning that

he's anemic. The doctor wants him to take OTC iron twice a day with orange juice

for the next month. Are there any legal iron supplements? Has anyone ever taken

a liquid supplement?

I'm a bit frustrated because he's been on SCD for over a year (except for a few

days when he went off to see if it was really helping) and has been on LDN and

he still has problems with bleeding and is now anemic, where he wasn't 9 months

ago. I'm not sure what else we can do...

Thanks for any input!

Liz

There are also iron injections you can do once a week at home. It's not great

having to give yourself shots, but worth it (IMO) to not take the oral iron.

It's been a while since I've done these- sorry I don't have any specific info

about the iron.

Liver pate.

Get ostrich filets and serve those regularly. They are expensive, but

very tasty. If you talk with Beth at Blackwing meats, she can tell you

about her experience with ostrich and anemia.

Lemon juice or orange juice with anything containing iron. Dark green

leafy vegetables have iron, too.

That seems like a bad idea. Iron supplements tend to irritate the gut, which is

the last thing he needs. It has to be better for him to get iron from dark and

red meat. How much of that is in his diet currently?

Thanks for all the input. I don't think I'll be able to get liver down him, even

if it would work. He's been eating a ton of red meat for the past year and it

hasn't seemed to keep his iron up. Or maybe he would be worse if he hadn't been

eating it.

After doing a bunch of research, I bought some Floradix Iron and herb liquid. It

has fruit juice concentrate, which probably isn't legal, but it looked closer to

legal than several other options.

Thanks again!

Liz,Although I respect your decision to try an iron supplementation (we did the same and it didn't work), you might want to read this Wiki entry regarding anemia of chronic disease. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anemia_of_chronic_diseaseAmeliaFrom: caralycalnikmom To:

Amelia,

Thanks for the information. I hesitate to not give my son an iron supplement

because 1) It was doctor's orders, not my choice and 2) My son has been bleeding

a lot and I'm sure that his iron is low because of the bleeding.

I won't be giving him the 325 mg pill twice a day as suggested, because I think

that will cause more problems than it will solve, but I think the lower dose,

liquid supplement will give him some extra iron without overkill.

Has anyone ever had testing done to see if their body is holding on to the iron

in the way the article mention?

Thanks,

Liz

I've been trying to boost my iron lately. I take Betaine HCl with my evening

meal (good acid levels are necessary for absorbing iron), the only one I have

with meat. I also take a couple of dessicated iron tabs at that time (that gets

around having to eat liver). For desert, I eat some raisins or dried apricots,

both of which are high in iron. I follow it up with a vitamin C pill.

If you have to break down and take iron pills, chelated iron is supposed to be

easiest on the gut. Solger has one called Gentle Iron, that has no illegal

binders. I believe Bluebonnet also has one.
