Guest guest
Hi everyone. I am the mom who asked for info on Periactin since my 9 year old just began taking it a week ago. It was great to have so many of you e-mail me immediately with your own experiences. For those of you I didn't speak with, my 9 year old daughter was born 3.5 weeks early, weighing 4lbs 8oz when we took her home and measuring 17 " long. She was always tiny and my pediatricians dismissed my concerns since i am only 4'9 " . What they failed to see was that my husband's height (5'11) should have also been considered. She has had various health concerns that have only been addressed after I started getting pushy and demanding that tests be done. We recently discovered that she has Asthma and severe allergies to dustmites and cats. She then was referred to an endocrinologist, Dr. Rotenstein, who did some tests and determined that her bone age is a little over a year younger than her actual age and her growth hormones are " normal. " But since she lost weight from one visit to the next, they put her on the Periactin. If this doesn't work, they said we should consider GH. What is the collective vote on GH? I am concerned about the long term effects of this. If my daughter continues to grow at her current rate, her adult height will be 4'10 " , but her estimated height based on my husband's and my height should be 5'3 " . That's a significant difference which makes me feel that GH deserves to be considered. I am not sure if she can be considered SGA, but she has had GH issues with feeling full very easily, eating like a bird and constipation. My gut tells me she also has some mild PDD-like symptoms such as inability to maintain eye contact and difficulty understanding body language and social interaction skills. She is immature for her age. I can't describe to you the feeling I had when I came across the Magic Foundation website. It was so amazing to see so many of my daughter's characteristics described in one place. Finally there was a connection to all the disparate characteristics I'd been concerned about with my daughter. I know that our journey is just beginning and I hope to learn and benefit from all of your experiences. Please feel free to share any advice that you think may be helpful. Thanks. -Veda ps She is now 46.25 " and 44.25lbs which I believe is 3rd percentile.
