Guest guest
Hey all, My surgery was this morning at 7:30. It went faster than they had expected and they claim it went perfectly. Now I'm recovering and it's not nice. My upper lip and parts of my cheeks are swollen, I'm on pain medication (which I'm waiting for to work). I have ice packs strapped to my head, I can't close my mouth and the jaw expander is already working. I have a slight gap between my 2 upper front teeth. I am salivating or draining and it's making me crazy. I cannot really talk and that's making me crazier. Maybe Pam or one of you can help me get through this? Thanks,
Guest guest
Hi , I had the pallate expansion done 3 years ago. I had a gap right after surgery as well because the surgeon cranked it twice right after surgery - then I would crank only once/day after that. I remember being swollen in my upper face too, it took a long time for that to go down. I had the ice around my face for 2 days, then I used a heat pack on my face, which, if you use enough, will help the swelling to go down further. The expander in your mouth will definetely make you salivate more than normal. It was so long ago I don't remember the progression of recovery. I do remember being very self conscious about the gap in my teeth for a long time after that, because I didn't get my braces on until 4 months later, then it took 4-5 months to close. I will tell you one thing - I was so happy with the results. My teeth were nice and wide (mine were widened by 10mm) - my tongue fit in the roof of my mouth, I could talk alot easier, before I was biting my tongue all the time and lisping - possibly things you have experienced if you have a narrow upper jaw. Give it some time - try to relax and rest for the next week. I'm recovering from lower jaw surgery right now, and I remember I recovered from the pallate expansion alot quicker. Good luck!
