Guest guest
Ben, I don't want to sound alarmist... but a week.. It took me a good 3 weeks before the swelling got down enough for me to speak more or less normally. Did your surgeon tell you about the possibility of being wired shut after the surgery? If this is your case, it might prove to be more difficult to speak. Exercise was " off limits " for 2 months. No high impact untill the fourth month. But this varies from one surgeon to another. Guest guest
Mmmm, I was speaking after one week but I wouldn't classify it as always comprehensible. I used to walk into stores and tell people right off the bat " Please excuse me for the way I talk but I just had jaw surgery which makes speaking hard " or rather " Pleesh excushe the way I chalk but I joost had shaw shurgery whish makesh speaking hardd. " And I certainly always had someone with me the first 2 weeks just in case someone couldn't understand me to translate for me. More than anything I just felt really self-conscious talking until 1 month post-op. SOrry to be such a downer. I think you can do it (mind you, I think you'll still be very tired after just one week) but it will take a lot of patience and willingness to laugh at yourself. Good luck! Guest guest
Well, I was kind of speaking after one week...that is if you consider ventriloquism as a form of speaking...no seriously, one week is kind of a long shot. You may very well be able to communicate, but there are definitely words and phonatics that will be VERY difficult to use. I am 12 days post op, my husband and friends can usually understand me, but I have to do a lot of repeating and speak slowly and your jaw gets real tired (being banded in one spot) quickly. My thoughts are with you. Best of Luck, Sandy > > Scheduled to have upper and lower surgery on Dec 13. Only planning on > being absent from work for a week. Guest guest
Thank you everyone for you response to this and other questions. I'll admit I'll very very nervous about this! The OS come highly recommended by my OD and regular dentist, but they are definitely painting this as no big deal, relatively pain free due to swelling and recovery a cinch after a week. I'm not even 100 percent certain I should be doing this, as I have no pain, TMJ, etc, and it is basically just to correct a cosmetic overbite. Luckily I have insurance that will absorb the cost down to 5 to 7 thousand dollars, which the surgeon will let me pay over a few years time interest free. The question just keeps coming up in my head... is this worth what may be a terrible recovery?? Will I be unable to speak for a long time? Will the no food part mean I'll lose a great deal of weight? I am far removed from a pain junkie, so I am not looking forward to the discomfort at all. Ok.. wuss session over.. I need to just roll up my sleeve for the IV and get it started tonight! > > > > Scheduled to have upper and lower surgery on Dec 13. Only planning > on > > being absent from work for a week.
