Guest guest
After a summer hiatus from chix soup, I made a batch last week to combat a cold bug of some sort I felt coming on. To my surprise, the first cup provoked some moderate cramping within minutes of consumption, lasting on and off for hours. Similar reaction over the next couple of days, though perhaps a tad less intense. No effect on stools, just the cramping. At first I thought it might've been due to onion and garlic I used, as they sometimes give me trouble, moreso garlic; the rest of recipe was my usual: a few chix thighs, carrots, thyme and bay leaf, and I put the meat back in after straining and blending the carrots. To be on safe side, I made a fresh batch yesterday, leaving out onion and garlic (and thyme). And I left the meat out afterwards, though I did eat some of this meat for dinner. But the reaction was even worse: intense cramping that started almost immediately and lasted throughout the evening and into this morning, accompanied by D this a.m. . I wondered if the reaction wasn't due, in part, to some intestinal bug that has accompanied cold symptoms in past, but no other foods seem to trigger that problem, and the timing of reaction was just too obvious to ignore. And besides, isn't chix soup supposed to soothe exactly that kind of problem? I bought the chix from two different stores, that latter batch from Whole Foods, so I don't think that's the source. I'm stumped. I hate to toss a whole batch of broth but I'm very hesitant to test this stuff again. I've never had this problem with home-made chix soup before. Is it possible to develop an intolerance to chix soup?? Maybe I left too much fat in the broth (though I did skim it some)? Lawd knows, I eat a ton of chix and eggs (and I've been careful to check the Lot #s on each carton to avoid the " bad " eggs that were coming out of Iowa). Hate to think I'm developing an intolerance to chix products in general, though I have noticed an increase in cramping after eating eggs on and off over the past several weeks, but with no negative impact on stool. Anyone else ever have trouble with broth? thanks, tom ibs / cfs
