Guest guest
What's the difference between CST and a chiropractor? It may be that needs CST or a chiropractor to help his reflux. Guest guest
A chiroporactor goes to chiropractic school and has a doctorate in the field. They study the spine mostly and how the nerves along the spine can affect all sorts of things. They do "adjustments," which often includes pushing parts of the spine back in alignment. By moving around in our everyday life, we get things out of alignment. That is why no one can truly graduate from chiropractic care. It is like the dentist in that you have to go for maintenance treatments. In fact, after starting to see one, I have learned that I probably could have benefited from one years ago. There are also different types of chiro and some involvement other areas of the body, such as the head. My chiro also adjusts my knee with an activator tool because I have an old running injury. I've had 3 rounds of PT so I knew that things were not perfectly aligned because the PT always tried to tape my knee cap to line it up. The activator fixes this, although it does go back out of alignment after a while and needs to be done again. And, once I was having tingling in my fingers in a place where I had once lost all feeling from a cat bite. She did an adjustment there and got the nerves unpinched and it was good to go again. For CST, the credentials are just taking coursework. I'm not sure if there are exams as well. There are some credentials, but the licensing really isn't there. Mostly, it is people who work with the body who take the coursework. There are some chiros, message therapists, and PTs that do it. To be honest, if I hadn't had the recommendation for the place that we went, I probably would have paid more to see an osteopath because these are typically doctors of osteopath who do cranial osteopathy. In other words, they have a licensing body and not just a training institute. Osteopathy is a little bit harder (from what I've heard) than CST. CST is a light touch and often focuses directly on the head. I guess the bottom line is that the theories of the 2 are similar, but chiro focuses more on the bones and how they restrict communication between areas of the body. The CST focuses on how the flow of energy through the spinal fluid restricts communication. Anyway, I did my best to explain, but here are some links for some additional information. This is where we go for our chiro: http://oschiropractic.com/templates20/sublux.html http://upledger.com/content.asp?id=26 In terms of what to do for the reflux - both CST and chiro have worked for babies. My 's reflux improved slightly with CST (in that she didn't need med increase as she gained weight), but she didn't get off of medication until we added the chiro. Unfortunately, I had to put her back on medication recently following a very strong reaction to a food exposure (food allergies). She started spitting up into her mouth and with eliminating three foods and giving the medication, I got her back to normal. I am now starting to wean her back off the medication - so I am hoping that it was temporary. But, has had severe reflux that resulted in a failure to thrive diagnosis as a baby. And, her food issues tend to aggrevate the problem. I guess the good news is that at about 27 to 28 pounds, she is still on the same dose that she took at 18 pounds. And, I am now down to half that dose and she is doing okay again. Oh - she now gets adjusted anywhere from once a month to once a week. It just depends upon our schedule and what else is going on with her. This is considered a maintenance schedule. We were told that you don't want to do it less than once a month. , mom to , 2 3/4 years STARband grad, May 2009 Chiro and CST land What is CST? Guest guest
Interesting. Well it seems that reflux (if that is what really does have) hasn't stop him from growing. He's six months tomorrow and weighs about 17 1/2 lbs if not a little more. He's a big boy! :-) I guess I really need to drill my doctor on Monday about this and see what we should do, whether switch formula, see a chiropractor or what to get him to stop spitting up/throwing up all the time. It never bothers him though so at least that's good but we go through so many burp cloths and bibs a day that I have to do a lot of laundry! Guest guest
Maysa had reflux as well and would spit up all the time. I couldn't put her on her tummy because she would literally throw up all of her food as a result. After I would nurse her, I remember having such a hard time getting her to burp without spitting it all out. The doctor told me that sometimes between 6 and 8 months, I think, there is a little flap that actually grows bigger somewhere at the top of their stomach that prevents the food or milk to come back up. Sorry I can't remember the medical term for it. It did get better eventually but I do remember how bad it was...
