Guest guest
Hey, 6 weeks post op upper, lower and widened palate. Well, today was what I thought was going to be the best day of my life. I had my splint removed. Well, I knew they were going to put this thing in my mouth to keep my palate from closing back in, but I had no idea that it was going to be almost as bad as the splint! I could't talk again, couldn't eat because everything got stuck up there, and it was positioned so low my tongue kept hitting it and it hurt to talk, eat, even swallow. So, I call my ortho. and she met me back at her office and took it out. She said we would wait 2 weeks to see if it starts to move back in. If not, I won't have to have it back in. If it does I will. Please, has anyone had this silver, skinny, bar thing going across the top of their mouth. Or has anyone had their palate widened and not had to wear anything? Please let me know. If I have to get it back in I have to wear it three months!!!! Can't deal with this!!! thanks, (having a nervous breakdown) tonya
Guest guest
Hi Tonya, When I had my upper done, they also split my palate and widened it. I am not sure if that is what you mean, but for what it's worth.... I had the splint in for 6 weeks and my OS wouldn't take it out earlier than that because he didn't want the expanded upper jaw to collapse and renarrow. He said it was a pain for ortho to monitor and easier to leave the splint in. After my splint was removed, however, I was never fitted for anything else to wear and never had any problems. My upper jaw was fine in that regard. I actually wasn't aware of the appliance that you mentioned in your post. I guess whatever is best for optimal healing and recovery. I can't imagine something in my mouth the way you described it however! That sounds miserable. I hope it works out that you excape having to wear it! Let us know what happens....Good luck! Guest guest
It's not this, is it? I found this while I was searching for SARPE info, just out of curiosity since so many people around here seem to have this done. http://www.zipcon.net/~brunt/SARPE.html That's the thing you turn every so often, isn't it? Probably not the same thing I'm sure. ~
Guest guest
Tonya, Might it have to do with how much your palet was widened? Perhaps if it was widened quite a lot the doctors want to be extra precautious. i had my palet widened but only by 4mm and I never had anything fitted into my mouth after my splint was taken. Also I had my splint removed after 3 and half weeks post op so I have a feeling my expansion was minor compared to most people. Perhaps you should ask your doctors why it is that some people have to wear this thing in their mouth and others don't citing Katja and myself as examples? I used to always cite examples from this site to my OMS to see what he would say. Very often it's an individual doctor's choice or preference. I do know that in the weeks that followed my splint removal I was constantly worrying that the little hole from where they had expanded my palet was opening up but that was my paranoia. The thing in your mouth does sound horrible but I'm sure it's your doctors be extra precautionary. Good luck and I hope you don't have to put it back in. Just take it easy and hopefully nothing will shift. Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Sara > It's not this, is it?
