Guest guest
I have had to take one prednisone taper since surgery for asthma, and had an extensive discussion with my PCP about the ulcer potential before I agreed to take it (I never cared as a pre-op, GIVE ME MY PRED SO I CAN BREATHE!!! LOL) He said that in his experience, the chance of ulcers is pretty low. He deals with a lot of geriatric patients who typically have low stomach acid, and often have similar problems to ours, so I trust him fairly well. Honestly, Judy, it sounds like Prednisone has saved your life. So do the taper, and be glad that it's helped you. If you're really worried, have a scope done to check that everything's in good shape. That would be my approach. I'm so glad to hear you're doing better and that the pred didn't pack the pounds on you. It always did me, I know what you mean about the incredible hunger. I have been guided to a number of incredible healers and I am feeling great now and my labs are perfect. However, I am trying to wean myself from prednisone (under the care of three excellent physicians and the advise of a number of alternative healers.) At the WLS support group the other night, a number of those who had had bowel obstructions were amazed that I had been put on Prednisone, considering I had a r-n-y 18 months ago. They said that it has been known to cause ulcers very quickly. No one has mentioned that side effect before. I am going to see the doctor on Monday and will ask, but I am curious if any of you had similar experiences or had information that I should share with the medical staff. they determined that the auto-immune had nothing to do with the surgery, just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. They are weaning me from 40mg and I am now down to 25mg daily and taking 150 mg of azathioprine daily. The only side effect of prednisone has been intense hunger, even though I have not gained any weight. It has really got my appetite running full steam. I have not developed the round face and weight gain which was a real fear after finally losing 120 pounds and maintaining a " normal' body. Thanks for your input.
