Hello,

I had my surgery 13 weeks ago and I don't regret having the surgery at all. When

my surgeon told me about the metal plates and screws it didn't bother me really,

I was more concerned about the impact the surgery would have on my speech. I was

born with a cleft lip and palate and I have had several issues with my speech so

this was one of my main concerns.

Due to my cleft I have had many surgeries but it doesn't make surgery any

easier. I have lost 20 lbs since my surgery.

For me, anyhow, I don't even know the screws are there.

If my gums and/or bone should recede, they may have to be removed...

Not that anybody has said that such is happening. I just have heard

that it can happen... But the person in whom it happened was 62 when

she had surgery, so presumably that's a long way off for you.

Some people to choose to have them removed. Some surgeons choose to

remove them. Some people have trouble with infection, or screws coming

loose.

I'm among the fortunate ones, in this as with so much else.

I had lower only, movement forward and to the side, and have only three

little, incredibly expensive, titanium screws on each side of my lower

jaw. Wouldn't know they were there if I hadn't been told and seen the x-

rays.

If this thing really has you bamboozled, though, ask your surgeon

whether he's (or she's) ever used the resorbable polymer screws (and/or

plates, depending on what you have done. They're still experimental, I

think, but a few folks have had them. They do their job to hold the

bone in place, and then are supposed to just be resorbed into the bone.

Best,

Cammie

Thanks Cammmie

You definetly know your stuff. I met my surgeon about a year ago and

he is supposedlyl amongst the best in the state (AZ). I'll take a

look at the polymer alternative, but apparenlty it's just a mental

issue that some people have no issues with and others (like myself)

might.
