hey all I just got the bill from my surgeon, total cost for him was

$8450, on the bill under insurance estimated says $5880, part I owe

$2750. I really never got a surgery before only used my insurance

for doctor visits and such, I had no idea it was gonna cost me that

much? I have blue cross/blue shield and its suppose to be pretty

good I thought.

I guess the hospital bill will be coming soon and I have no idea how

much that is going to be, I had to get two surgeries done so I was

in the hospital twice, once for 23 hours and the other I went

directly home.

Im going to call my insurance company up and get some more details

and ask them if this is correct but I will have to wait until I can

speak, Im wired now and talking is tough

I was curious what some of you paid out of pocket for your surgery,

and will the hospital bill be more than the surgeon bill? I think I

have a $500 deductible and I knew I would have to pay some after

that and now im scared of the hospital bill coming.

just wondering what some other people had to pay?

Hey nky_guy77,

My SARPE only cost about $4,000 something, but that was for the

surgeon. My hospital bill was about three times that and I was only

there for about 7 hours. I have insurance and they're paying the

majority of it but still I think the hospital bill was a little

outrageous.

Anyone else?

What type of plan do you have? If it's PPO you should

see if your surgeon and hospital were in-network and

then the rates are discounted. If it's out of network

then you will pay alot more out of pocket. Your plan

should also have an " out of pocket " maximum so once

you've paid out so muich then it caps and the

remaining charges are paid at 100% for the rest of the

calendar year. I have a PPO and my out of pocket max

is $2,500.

Hospital charges can be steep and be higher than the

surgery depending on how long you were in. Sounds

like you only had one overnight stay so it shouldn' be

too bad. My surgeon estimates my hospital bill would

be around $80,000 for 3 nights and his surgery fee is

$16,000. My responsibility would be $2,500.

Hope that helps.

Kim

That's actually not bad at all. For my orthognathic surgery, my

surgeon's fee was $18,000 of which I had to pay $5800. The total

hospital bill was $85,000 and we had to pay about $6000 for that. I

can't remember how much my other surgeries cost me but the hospital

bill for my joint replacements was $120,000. Luckily I had a

different insurance for that so my total out-of-pocket expense

was " only " $6000. BCBS varies from state to state but has a terrible

reputation in NC where I live and pays very little for orthognathic

surgeries. It sounds like yours is pretty good.

For what it's worth...

I'm in upstate NY... At the time of my surgery, I had blue choice

which, if I understand correctly is affiliated with blue cross/blue

shield. My surgeon was a provider with the company... so basically,

regardless of what he billed them, they had a certain allowed amount

that they would pay him for the surgery. As a provider, he then had

to write off the remaining difference. He was not allowed to charge

me the difference. So, my surgeon costs were $60... basically 3

copays of $20 each for my preop visit, surgery, and then one post op

visit (not bad cosidering that he's seen me several dozens of times

with my incessant worries and questions!). My genio was separate and

not covered by my insurance. I paid the price agreed upon with my

surgeon- $1300- I was lucky, he misquoted me by $200, so he let me

have it for the price he misquoted to me. Anyway, the genio cost,

since it was cosmetic, was arranged directly between us and I was

billed for it directly. No insurance coverage for it. As far as the

hospital goes... I wasn't there over 23 hours so they didn't consider

me technically admitted to the hospital. They have some provision

about 23 hour stays or less. Because I wasn't officially admitted

into the hospital, my insurance's hospital copay didn't apply. I paid

nothing to the hospital or for anesthesiology or anything. My

insurance covered it entirely. Look into that aspect of your bill

because if you weren't even there one full 24 hour period either .

Btw, my 23 hour period did include staying overnight... the clock

started ticking once I was taken up to my room postop. I left the

following afternoon before 23 hours had passed. So, my total bill was

$1360, all said and told. Anyway, I hope this helps. Good luck

sorting it out! I'm sure you don't feel very up to dealing with it

now, but you'll get it figured out. Definitely look into the specific

provisions of you plan and look into whether your surgeon is a

provider with that plan/company.

Take care,

Katja

Hi Sriram,

I had that with another surgery. My surgeon and the hospital were

in network, but the anesthesiologist was not. I was sent a bill for

the 20% of the anesthesiologist fee. I called the anesthesiologists

office and they cancelled the 20% due to a contract they have with

the hospital. Some offices will do this, some won't. Good luck

with this. Let us know!

Hugs,

Both upper and lower jaws done. Surgeon's fee was $12,000, of which

I haven't gotten a bill yet. The hospital already billed us for

$22,000 for the 3 day stay. No idea on the other people that helped

with the surgery and their fees. Most of mine were out of network, so

I pay 80% up to my max yearly deductable which is $3200. (of which I

already paid) So I'm free and clear from here on out I think.

Considering how much the insurance costs me, I think billing them

$40,000 plus for 3 days work is well worth it. :)
